Standard Framework for Powder Coatings and Resin Flooring: New PCRs from ACA
The American Coatings Association (ACA) is pleased to announce the publication of updated Product Category Rules (PCRs) for Powder Coatings and Resinous Flooring. ACA initiated the development of these PCRs in coordination with Sustainable Minds, a software and services company that integrates environmental performance into mainstream product development and manufacturing processes in an accessible, empowering and reliable way.

The work was conducted in collaboration with Sustainable Minds, a software and services company aimed at integrating environmental performance into product development and manufacturing processes in a reliable and accessible manner.

PCRs provide an agreed-upon framework for measuring a product's environmental impacts based on specific criteria. Through this structure, manufacturers can conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) of their products in standardized form and, if requested, publish the results within the scope of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
Given sustainability guides and green certification programmes that prioritize products with verified EPDs, PCRs carry strategic importance for the sector. LCA results contribute to demonstrating the performance characteristics of products, including durability, while providing manufacturers with the opportunity to document improvements in resource efficiency throughout the supply chain.
According to the updated rules, the type of EPD created for Resinous Floor Coatings will depend on whether single-layer product results or multi-layer system results are used as the basis. The PCR for Powder Coatings mandates that the EPD be prepared in "cradle to gate" format and requires assessments to be conducted on a single-layer product basis rather than multi-layer systems.
