Jotun Takes on Key Role in France's EOLMED Floating Wind Project

International protective coatings leader Jotun has taken on a significant role in the EOLMED floating offshore wind project off Gruissan in southern France. Contributing to the French renewable energy strategy, this innovative pilot project saw Jotun provide technical coating solutions for both exterior surfaces and interior sections, supporting the long-term protection of critical assets.

Jotun, an international leader in protective coatings, played a key role in the EOLMED floating offshore wind project located off Gruissan in southern France. In this innovative pilot project contributing to French renewable energy strategy, Jotun provided technical coating solutions for both external surfaces and internal compartments, supporting long-term protection of critical assets.

Sustainable protection for the energy future
EOLMED, equipped with three Vestas V164-10 MW turbines mounted on floating foundations designed by BW Ideol and manufactured by MP Archimed, targets approximately 110 million kWh/year electricity generation; this level is planned to meet the annual energy needs of approximately 50,000 households. The project is positioned approximately 18 km offshore from Port-La Nouvelle, Occitanie, and serves as a reference for the future of commercial-scale offshore wind energy in Europe.

Jotun's contribution extended beyond external surfaces; it also included solvent-free, sustainable coating solutions for internal spaces—such as larger areas in ballast tanks. These solutions were applied in collaboration with Matière and Italian applicator Petrol Lavori, aligned with the project owner's environmental requirements.

Solutions meeting top technical standards
Jotun also supplied coatings for equipment and transition pieces at Navacel shipyard and responded to strict technical requirements with the Jotun NORSOK 1 system. Throughout the project, Jotun's technical team provided critical support at every stage of execution, ensuring application quality, regulatory compliance and operational support.

Torgeir Bringeland, Sales and Marketing Director Europe at Jotun, commented on the scope:

"The scope covering both internal and external coatings for three floating units involved approximately 60,000 litres of Jotacote Universal S120, Penguard Pro GF and Hardtop AX. We are proud to have secured this project and believe it will be a strong reference for our capabilities both within and beyond the European market. Enabling the energy future requires assets to have long-lasting protection even in the most challenging environments."

EOLMED: Innovation and flagship project
The EOLMED project was completed in September 2025 at Port-La Nouvelle and was realised in line with France's targets for increasing floating offshore wind capacity. The project has a planned operational lifespan of 20 years and represents a milestone for similar commercial-scale farms.
