Covestro announced the completion of the expansion of its laboratory for coatings and adhesives formulations in Shanghai. This development strengthens the company's capability to deliver faster and customized solutions to customers across Asia Pacific.
The laboratory, housed within Covestro's Asia-Pacific Innovation Center, now spans over 3,000 square meters, representing approximately a 20% increase in area. The facility has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including a new synthesis unit for water-based polyurethane dispersions, which play a key role in developing coatings and adhesives with low volatile organic compounds (VOC). This unit enhances efficiency in scaling simulations, troubleshooting and customer sample production.
The facility now supports a broader range of raw materials, including polyurethanes, acrylics, polyesters and sustainable alternatives. It provides faster formulation, testing and adaptation capabilities to meet customer demands across multiple sectors, from automotive and renewable energy to construction, printing and packaging.
The laboratory automates and digitizes development processes by integrating artificial intelligence-enabled formulation tools, simulation and robotic systems. These improvements accelerate the development of new products and formulations while increasing speed, precision and consistency; simultaneously reducing material waste and carbon footprint.
Anand Khot, Head of Covestro Coatings and Adhesives Asia Pacific Region, stated, "This expansion is an important step in strengthening our formulation capabilities and supporting our customers' innovation needs more closely and rapidly. It also reinforces our strategy of investing in markets with high growth potential and sustainable solutions."
Dr. André Rittermeier, Head of Covestro's Asia-Pacific Innovation Center and also Head of Group Innovation and Sustainability Asia Pacific, said, "The laboratory also strengthens cross-functional collaboration within our regional innovation center. By leveraging our shared technical and digital infrastructure, we are increasing innovation efficiency. This development is an important milestone on our path to delivering local solutions with global impact."
