PetroChina (Shanghai) Advanced Materials Research Institute And CAS Publish Data-Driven Analysis Of Global Polymer Innovation
PetroChina (Shanghai) Advanced Materials Research Institute Co., Ltd. (SAMRI), one of the research organizations of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), and CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, today published a report titled Polymer Frontiers: A Comprehensive Data-Driven Analysis of Emerging Trends. The report, the organizations' first joint publication, combines SAMRI's materials science expertise with CAS's scientific data and analytical capabilities in order to reveal the direction in which global polymer innovation is heading.

CAS Interim CEO Tim Wahlberg said, "Polymer science is advancing on many fronts simultaneously, and the organizations shaping this future need a data-driven picture that shows not just where conventional wisdom points, but where innovation is actually happening. This report brings together CAS's scientific knowledge base with SAMRI's industrial expertise to provide exactly that."

Polymer Frontiers draws on nearly one million polymer-related journal publications and patent records from 2015–2025 within the CAS Content Collection™, the world's largest human-curated scientific database. Using advanced bibliometric analysis and natural language processing methods, it identifies areas where research is concentrated, reveals competitive positions among geographies and institutions, and tracks emerging application areas. The report addresses four high-priority application areas: polymers in energy storage, sustainable polymers, flexible electronics, and membrane technologies. It also examines eight emerging areas, ranging from next-generation polyesters and dynamic polymer networks to framework-polymer hybrids and conductive polymer systems.

Among the report's findings: Asia-Pacific has become the dominant hub of polymer innovation, with China holding a leading position in core research output and patent development in strategic areas including flexible electronics, energy storage, and membrane technologies. The report documents significant growth in sustainable polymer research; bio-based materials are competing not only on their environmental benefits but also on performance metrics. Innovation in energy storage applications is concentrated around battery technologies, which account for a very high share—75%—of all polymer-related energy storage patents. Demand for clean energy is also driving rapid growth in advanced membrane systems, particularly anion exchange membranes for fuel cells and electrolyzers.

SAMRI Vice President Dr. Xudong Huang said, "At SAMRI, we are committed to bridging fundamental polymer science with the large-scale industrial applications that will define next-generation materials. The report, co-published with CAS, systematically examines global innovation trends in both the academic and industrial domains of polymers with a rigorous, scientific, and global perspective. It gives us a clearer understanding of the competitive landscape in global innovation and provides important guidance for our strategic research direction in advanced materials."
