Important Recommendations for Heart Patients During the Summer Season

People over 50, those who are overweight, or those with heart disease face particular risk from high temperatures during summer months. Complaints among heart disease patients may increase with hot weather, and dangerous situations can arise when patients do not take appropriate precautions. Specialist Doctor Nuri Cömert from the Cardiology Department at Memorial Antalya Hospital provided important information about precautions that people with heart conditions should take during hot weather. Summer heat can create problems for anyone. Especially during hot weather—which is dangerous for people over 50, those who are overweight, and those with heart conditions—the body works to maintain normal temperature. Sweating is the body's attempt to distribute skin temperature evenly throughout the body. This effort increases heart rate and causes blood pressure to drop, placing additional strain on the cardiovascular system. This strain can worsen symptoms in people with known heart disease. For example, chest pain may develop in someone with cardiovascular disease, or shortness of breath may develop or worsen in someone with heart failure.

Heart patients should pay attention to the following during hot weather:

1. The effects of medications used in heart disease treatment may change during hot weather. As temperatures rise, heart patients should adjust their medication regimen in consultation with their doctor. Do not stop or change the dose of your heart medication without your doctor's knowledge. 2. During the day, particularly between noon and 3 p.m., avoid spending time outdoors. 3. If you will be spending your day outside in sunny weather, make sure to drink adequate amounts of water. 4. Avoid strenuous physical activity, and always consult your doctor before starting a regular exercise program during summer months. 5. Wearing cotton, light-colored clothing, and wearing a hat and sunglasses will protect you from heat and reduce fluid loss. 6. Drink fluids before and after walking. While on holiday at seaside and pool areas, avoid the habit of consuming alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Rest and breathe in shaded and cool places during walking breaks to protect your heart health. 7. People with heart disease should carry a mobile phone with them and should save the phone number of a family member they can call in emergencies.
