The number of autistic children has shown rapid growth over the past 20 years. Today, one in every 68 children falls within the autism spectrum. Although the true cause of autism remains unknown, both genetic and environmental factors can play a role. Environmental exposure to certain chemicals stands out as an important factor. Research has shown that children of women working in jobs involving solvent chemicals have a 1.5 times higher risk of being on the autism spectrum. Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Op. Dr. Betül Görgen provided important information about the details of a new scientific study published in the JOEM journal.

Mothers Working in Industrial Sectors Take Note

"In recent years, particularly in the United States, the increase in the number of children on the autism spectrum has driven researchers to identify factors beyond genetic inheritance. The new National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has identified a strong link between children with autism and mothers working in industrial jobs involving strong chemicals.

Chemical Solvents Increase Risk

Chemical solvents used particularly widely in many fields are of concern. (Dry cleaning, food packaging and pharmaceutical-related substances). Children of mothers working in sectors using chemical solvents such as asphalt, metal, plastic have a 1.5 times higher autism risk. Absorption of these substances through skin and respiratory routes affects both the reproductive system and fetal development."
