Huawei Turkey Unveils Smart Distribution Solutions

Digital Trends in Power Distribution Summit, organized by Huawei Turkey and ELDER on 4 September in Istanbul. At the summit, leading representatives from Turkey's IT and electricity industry exchanged views on how to manage new energy sources and increase operational efficiency in distribution networks. Steps to be taken were among the topics emphasized at the summit as contributing to Turkey's achievement of its 'Net Zero Emissions' target by 2053.

Huawei introduced its Smart Distribution Solution, developed to enhance the security and efficiency of Turkey's electricity distribution networks, at the Digital Trends in Power Distribution Summit held in Istanbul. This solution is seen as an important step in line with the National Energy Plan, which works towards Turkey's achievement of its net zero emissions target by 2053.

Turkey's strategic position at the intersection of Europe and Asia presents significant opportunities for the development of new energy sources such as wind and solar. Turkey reached a turning point in terms of sustainability in energy use on 12 February 2024 and managed to meet 60% of its energy needs from renewable sources.

TEDAŞ Deputy General Manager Zübeyir Çalışan used the following statements in his opening speech at the summit: "As reflected in the 12th Development Plan, our digital government objectives serve as our greatest guide. Within the framework of the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry's Energy Efficiency 2030 Strategy and the 2nd National Energy Efficiency Action Plan, projects supporting energy efficiency have been targeted, such as increasing energy efficiency in general lighting, electricity transmission and distribution activities and promoting the widespread use of smart meters. As TEDAŞ, we have prepared our action plans in line with climate change, energy supply security and the European Green Deal, and have started our work at a rapid pace in order to achieve these targets.

ELDER Business Development and R&D Coordinator İlkem Alpay included the following statements in his speech: "We will soon witness faster and more comprehensive transformations to sustainably and reliably meet the increasing electricity demand. Efficiency is not just a goal, but also an understanding that guides our daily practices and finds a place in our lives. We are forming the backbone of this transformation process. We, who operate electricity distribution networks, must be pioneers in adopting innovation and new technologies with the determinism of electrification. Our distribution companies, which manage a massive network across the country and provide the sole service that touches all citizens, can only move the quality and continuity of distribution services they are expected to provide to an even better point with innovation and technology support."

Huawei Power Energy Digitalization Business Unit Global Marketing and Solutions Head Jason Li said the following in his opening speech: "Huawei has launched a dedicated business unit for the power energy sector. We are committed to deeply understanding our customers' business scenarios, solving their problems, creating value and making long-term investments in this sector for decades to come."

Electricity distribution networks are positioned as the final stage in delivering electricity from transformer centers to homes, workplaces and industries. According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) 2024 electricity report, most power outages globally can originate from distribution problems, which could represent 80% of total customer service interruptions. Increasing electricity demand and renewable energy use create uncertainties for Turkey's electricity grid. For this reason, the Electricity Distribution Services Association (ELDER) developed a 'Smart Grid Roadmap' that outlines the smart grid systems that all its members should adopt. SGCC Shaanxi Information and R&D Center Technical Director Li Shenglei also shared China's digitalization approaches in the electricity sector, the challenges encountered and progress made.

Huawei announced smart distribution solutions with the following features to overcome all these challenges.

Reduction of Line Losses: Line losses in electricity networks can be a significant problem, particularly in geographically large and diverse regions like Turkey. Huawei's High Power Line Carrier (HPLC) technology provides fast and secure data access with reliability reaching 99.9%. This technology reduces line losses to a minimum, thereby increasing network efficiency.

Increased Power Supply Reliability: Power outages and disruptions in power supply are among the most significant challenges faced by energy distribution networks. Huawei's Fiber and Wireless Backhaul Networks ensure data flow in electricity distribution systems, greatly increasing network reliability. The developed smart analytics solutions also rapidly detect and repair faults in emergencies.

New Energy Management: The integration of renewable energy sources such as solar energy and electric vehicles into distribution networks is also of great importance. Huawei's 'Single Device' approach offers a hardware-based 5-in-1 platform designed to meet new energy service requirements. This platform enables the separation of software and hardware, allowing energy services to be provided in a flexible and secure manner.

Increased Operational Efficiency: Effective management of electricity distribution networks depends not only on technology but also on the optimization of operational processes. Huawei's 'Single Platform' solution optimizes operational processes with geographically redundant 3DC disaster recovery solution and private cloud system. This solution provides IT/OT data integration, making network management more secure and efficient.
