Achievement for TÜBA Young Academy Member Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan, TÜBA Young Academy Member, Founder of the Biomaterials and Nanotechnology Research Group | BioNanoTeam, and Faculty Member at the Department of Forest Industry Engineering, Faculty of Forestry, Istanbul University, has been selected for the European Union COST Action CA21126 Working Group. The European Union COST Action called NanoSpace & CA21126 (Carbon Molecular Nanostructures in Space), comprising leading experts from 34 countries, aims to determine the presence of carbon-based nanoparticles in space, their formation mechanisms, and their astrochemical roles.

Who is TÜBA Young Academy Member Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan?

He completed his undergraduate degree at the Department of Forest Industry Engineering, Istanbul University, ranking 2nd in his class in 2003, his master's degree in 2007, and his doctoral degree in 2012 at the Department of Forest Industry Engineering, Istanbul University. During his master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral studies, he visited numerous universities and research institutions in the United States, Canada, Sweden, England, Germany, and China, conducting scientific research and investigations, and carrying out scientific studies with leading scientists in his field worldwide. Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan has conducted numerous qualified international scientific papers, presentations, projects, patents, and industrial studies on nanocomposites / bionanocomposites, biomaterials, applications of nanotechnology in the furniture/wood/adhesive industry, bioadhesives, adhesives and wood-based composite panel products reinforced with nanoparticles, Industry 4.0, smart products/smart manufacturing systems/smart factories, renewable energy (wood/non-wood pellets, wood/non-wood briquettes, etc.), thermal characterization of materials (DMTA, TMA, TGA, DTA, DSC), and medical applications of biomaterials. Prof. Dr. Candan conducted the first doctoral studies in Turkey on the applications of nanotechnology in the wood industry. He also made significant contributions to the establishment of the first "Nanotechnology Laboratory" and "Thermal Analysis Laboratory" conducting research in these mentioned fields in our country. His research and development and innovation work has contributed to the development of environmentally friendly, high-performance, durable, low formaldehyde emission, antibacterial, high dimensional stability, and fire and biologically resistant wood/wood-based composite panel products and furniture components. On the other hand, research and development and innovation work continues on the applications of lignocellulosic bionano materials such as nanocellulose and nanolignin in the medical, pharmaceutical, energy, composite, food, and electronic fields. Zeki Candan carried out his work at Istanbul University between 2006-2018, and at Istanbul University–Cerrahpaşa from 2018 onwards. He received the TÜBA Distinguished Young Scientist Award in 2019. Candan became a TÜBA Young Academy Member in 2020. Source
