Clariant Launches DESVOCANT Adsorbents for Natural VOC Removal from Packaging Clariant has introduced Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) solutions that the industry has been awaiting. With an innovative product range of clay mineral-based DESVOCANT adsorbents manufactured using sustainable methods, Clariant effectively reduces exposure to volatile organic chemicals from products manufactured in sealed packaging for shippers, traders and consumers.

Products stored or packaged in enclosed spaces increase the likelihood of VOC accumulation. This buildup manifests among consumers as an unpleasant new product odor released when items are removed from packaging. In some cases, products are returned by consumers due to persistent odors caused by VOCs. More critically, shippers, cargo carriers and traders may experience serious health problems when exposed to high concentrations of suddenly released VOCs upon opening shipping containers during product inspection or unloading.

Justin Mueller, Director of the Cargo and Product Protection Business Group at Clariant Functional Minerals Division, shares his views on the matter: "DESVOCANT enables manufacturers and distribution chains to control and reduce VOC accumulation frequently experienced due to chemical gas formation. Based on naturally occurring and non-toxic bentonite clay with a unique surface structure, DESVOCANT adsorbents are dried in granule form and stored in air-permeable packaging. Within shipping containers, separately packaged or boxed products, all VOCs—whether odorous or odorless—in the air can be effectively trapped in DESVOCANT packets through the method of adhering to the surface of the clay granules.

The adsorbents come in various sizes ranging from small product packages for shoes, bags or clothing to full container loads of carpets, paints, toys, plastic packaging, pillows and furniture. Additionally, the packets are dust-free and can therefore be used with both light and dark-colored products.
