Automatic Monitoring System to Be Added for Discharge Water at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Project

The system will provide real-time monitoring of all key parameters of the cooling water to be discharged into the Mediterranean Sea.

The system will enable real-time monitoring of all key parameters of cooling water to be discharged into the Mediterranean.

It has been decided to equip the turbine condensers cooling system of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), built by Russia's state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, with an automated system to monitor water discharged into the Mediterranean Sea. This will make the project even more environmentally friendly, taking into account changing requirements in Turkish Republic legislation.
According to the decision, the system to be added to the project will allow remote monitoring of the discharged water's purity and flow rate, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, pH values, chemical oxygen demand, temperature, conductivity and other key parameters. The system will operate at the Akkuyu NPP site throughout the entire lifecycle of the power plant.

AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. General Director Sergei Butckikh commented on the matter: "The Akkuyu NPP project is being implemented in accordance with high environmental standards and sustainable development principles. All environmental parameters at and around the NPP construction site, including soil, air, vegetation, wildlife and of course seawater, are being systematically monitored. For us, this is not merely a matter of regulatory compliance, but part of the project's philosophy. All power plant employees will live in this region with their families, and each is aware of their personal responsibility for the condition of the natural environment. On the eve of World Environment Day, it is particularly important for us to emphasize that the ecological balance of the marine environment in the power plant region will be preserved throughout all stages of the Akkuyu NPP project implementation."
