SABIC Collaborates with Beiersdorf

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, announced that Beiersdorf's skincare company will use certified renewable polypropylene (PP) from SABIC's TRUCIRCLE ™ "second generation" bio-based material portfolio in cosmetic packaging. New packaging products will be introduced to the market in 2021 and will replace fossil-based virgin PP. SABIC's certified renewable polymers, including various PP and polyethylene (PE) materials, are derived from "second generation" renewable raw materials that are free of animal and palm oils, such as high-fat waste streams from pulp processing in the paper industry, and do not compete directly with sources for human food and animal feed production. Within the framework of its CARE BEYOND SKIN Sustainability Agenda, which has ambitious targets to be implemented by 2025, Beiersdorf aims to make its packaging 100% refillable, reusable or recyclable, increase the share of recycled material in plastic packaging to 30%, and reduce the use of fossil-based virgin plastic by 50% (compared to 2019). Plant-based materials provide easy drop-in solutions to existing fossil-based plastic conversion processes and applications without compromising on purity, quality, safety or ease. SABIC is committed to helping its partners benefit from this potential."
SABIC's certified renewable polymers are based on a mass balance approach compliant with the widely recognized International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) scheme.
Mass balance is determined to allocate the renewable content used in the production and conversion of plastic material to the final application. This allows brand owners to highlight and measure the sustainable choice consumers can make by purchasing end products packaged with renewable plastics. ISCC PLUS accreditation verifies that mass balance accounting follows predefined and transparent rules. The certificate also provides traceability across the entire supply chain of business partners from raw material to final product. Furthermore, a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment validated the sustainability aspects of SABIC's certified renewable materials. From raw material supply to polymer production, every tonne of the company's bio-based PP and PE resin reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 4 kg compared to fossil-based virgin alternatives, while also reducing fossil consumption by 80% [1]. The study was conducted according to ISO 14040 and validated in a critical third-party review. SABIC's comprehensive TRUCIRCLE offering includes design for recyclability services, mechanically recycled materials, certified circular products from chemical recycling of used plastics, and certified renewable polymers from bio-based raw materials.
