Cabot Corporation, a global specialty chemicals and performance materials company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, recently launched CAB-O-SIL® MT-6460 fumed silica, a new dry fumed silica matting agent for wood and leather coating applications. This high-efficiency matting additive provides good matting performance at low loadings, smooth surface appearance and superior clarity. CAB-O-SIL MT-6460 is suitable for water-based acrylics and polyurethanes and epoxy resins.
Fumed silica is particularly well-suited for water-based systems. These systems can reduce solvent use by up to 60% compared to conventional solvent-based systems, helping to lower environmental impact. Fumed silica can also make formulations more cost-effective for customers by achieving the same gloss level with 50% less material compared to organic wax, operating efficiently.
Jeff Zhu, Vice President and President of Carbon and Silica Technologies, Battery Materials and Asia Pacific at Cabot Corporation, commented, "As a leading performance materials manufacturer, we are committed to partnering with our customers to understand their specific application requirements and leverage our technical expertise to develop innovative solutions that meet current and future market needs. We are excited to expand our product portfolio by bringing this new CAB-O-SIL solution to market, which will address a significant need in the coatings market as formulators increasingly transition to water-based systems. Our innovative solution will enable our customers to achieve their sustainability targets as we work together to provide a more sustainable future."
CAB-O-SIL MT-6460 fumed silica is suitable for wood and leather applications as well as applications such as printing inks and packaging. It can also be used in certain ultraviolet and non-polar systems.
Cabot will exhibit the CAB-O-SIL MT-6460 fumed silica product at the European Coatings Show, taking place 25-27 March 2025 in Nuremberg, Germany, at booth 1-531 in Hall 1. The company will also present other solutions for various coating applications, including the VULCAN® conductive carbon black portfolio, CAB-O-SIL® TS-610 fumed silica and EMPEROR® 1800 and EMPEROR® 2000 specialty carbon blacks.
