PepsiCo's Manisa Plant Prevents Carbon Emissions Equivalent to 14,000 Trees

PepsiCo prevented as much carbon emission last year as approximately 14,000 trees would clean, thanks to its biomethanization facility in Manisa.

PepsiCo prevented carbon emissions equivalent to what approximately 14,000 trees clean annually through its biomethanization facility at its Manisa plant last year.

PepsiCo Turkey produces biomethane gas from organic waste (primarily food waste) at its Manisa Factory's biomethanization facility, which can be used in place of natural gas. Thanks to this project, a first in Turkey, approximately 14,000 trees' worth of carbon emissions were prevented in 2024. In 2025, the project was enhanced: biomethane production was increased by utilizing waste from other companies as well.

PepsiCo Turkey shared the first-year results of its Biomethanization Facility project, which was commissioned in the final months of 2023 in line with the pep+ strategy. The project produces biomethane gas from organic waste that can replace natural gas used in homes and workplaces. The 7.5 million kWh of biomethane produced in 2024 prevented 1,370 tons of carbon dioxide emissions; this is equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration capacity of 13,700 mature trees.

PepsiCo Turkey, as a first both within the global PepsiCo ecosystem and in Turkey, implemented the Biomethanization Facility at its Manisa Factory, using biomethane gas derived from organic waste to meet the PepsiCo Manisa Factory's natural gas requirements while continuing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

PepsiCo Turkey General Manager Ergün Günay, emphasizing the importance of private-sector cooperation for the environment, stated:
'We started our biomethanization facility by using our own waste. Thanks to the 7.5 million kWh of biomethane we produced in 2024, we prevented 1,370 tons of CO₂ emissions; this is equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration capacity of approximately 14,000 trees. In 2025, we began using waste from neighboring factories. In this way, we created a pioneering industrial collaboration model that contributes to both the environment and the circular economy. With waste collected from our partners, we prevent over 1,000 tons of carbon emissions.

Using advanced technology and engineering to produce ready-to-use biomethane at 99% purity
PepsiCo Turkey, which currently generates electricity from organic waste through cogeneration facilities at its factories in Turkey, meets 35% of its electricity needs through Organic Waste Treatment Facilities at its food factories. It sources the remaining portion of its electricity needs from solar panels and companies providing renewable electricity. At the Manisa factory, an advanced technology and engineering system that produces biomethane equivalent to natural gas instead of electricity is being applied for the first time in Turkey. At the Biomethanization Facility, degradable organic waste such as potatoes, chips, starch, oil, treatment sludge and similar materials are converted to biogas through fermentation in an oxygen-free environment over a 25-30 day period. This stage of the process is called the Anaerobic Digestion method. The biogas released then undergoes a series of purification processes in the Methane Unit, the facility's most critical component, to be made ready for use, and as a result is converted to 99% pure biomethane. Thanks to this process, the biomethane produced can be used as fuel in place of natural gas in production lines.
PepsiCo's Biomethanization Facility was a first and model in many areas.

A 50-person PepsiCo Turkey team worked with experts from Germany and Portugal to use the most advanced technologies. Designed in accordance with the Industry 4.0 concept, the facility at the Manisa Factory is managed from a single hub through an automation system. The project became a model within the PepsiCo ecosystem; it has begun being implemented in Portugal and is planned to be deployed in other countries soon.
