Henkel Reaches 100% Renewable Electricity in MEA Region

Henkel continues its consistent approach in sustainability with the goal of "Creating Transformative Impact for Generations to Come". The company continues to take steps within the framework of its '2030+ Sustainability Targets'. Most recently, Henkel achieved an important sustainability milestone in its Adhesive Technologies Business Unit, where it is one of the world's leading solution providers in adhesives, sealants and functional coatings: all Henkel Adhesive Technologies production facilities in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region have transitioned to 100% renewable electricity.

A total of eight Adhesive Technologies production facilities located in six countries where Henkel operates in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region have successfully switched to renewable electricity sources. Through this transition, the company has eliminated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from electricity consumption at these facilities, in other words Scope 2 emissions. This transition includes on-site solar energy installations as well as external renewable sources such as hydroelectric and wind energy.

On-site photovoltaic (PV) solar energy and hydroelectric-derived renewable electricity in Turkey and Kenya, wind energy in South Africa, and solar energy in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are the renewable energy sources that have been deployed.

Through this transition, Henkel reduces approximately 10,471 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually within the scope of Scope 2 activities. This figure is equivalent to eliminating the carbon footprint generated by approximately 2,500 gasoline-powered cars driving for one year or nearly 2,700 flights between New York and Singapore. By significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption, Henkel creates a notable environmental impact and is among the sector's pioneers.

Mehmet Yılmaz, President of Turkish Henkel Adhesive Technologies and Director of Operations for Henkel Adhesive Technologies Middle East and Africa Region, stated: "At Henkel, sustainability is at the core of our strategic agenda and we have very clear targets on which we are continuously making progress. One of our targets is to source 100% of our electricity from renewable sources globally in all countries by 2030. However, as Turkish Henkel, we have been sourcing all the electricity we use at our Gebkim and Tuzla Adhesive Technologies plants from renewable sources since 2023. Now we have achieved the same success at all our Henkel Adhesive Technologies production facilities in the Middle East and Africa region. Reaching our regional target as of 2024 demonstrates the strong steps we are taking towards creating a more sustainable future, while also being a great source of pride for us."

All these developments are part of Henkel's '2030+ Sustainability Targets Framework', through which Henkel aims for climate-positive operations and net-zero emissions by 2030.
