The Sabri Ülker Foundation, which brings scientific information in the fields of food, nutrition and health to society, drew attention to the positive contribution of informed choices and balanced nutrition habits on World Food Day on 16 October.
Sabri Ülker Foundation Chairman Dr. Talat İçöz said, "Balanced nutrition habits are shaped by correct information and informed choices. Food literacy means that individuals take responsibility not only for themselves, but also for the future of our society and our world. As the Sabri Ülker Foundation, through collaborations with the European Food Information Council (EUFIC) and studies such as the Food Literacy Research we conduct, we evaluate society's level of nutrition and health literacy; we contribute to the development of effective strategies in this field."
According to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 673 million people worldwide face hunger due to rapid population growth, the effects of the climate crisis, wars and fragility in economies. Equivalent to 8.2% of the world's population, this figure reveals a picture that worsens with each passing day, while international organizations are calling for coordinated action.
For this purpose, 16 October is celebrated annually as "World Food Day" around the world, commemorating FAO's founding day in 1945. This year's theme for World Food Day, which draws attention to global hunger and food insecurity issues, has been chosen as "Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future."
The path to healthy living awareness runs through food literacy
The Sabri Ülker Foundation, which has contributed to the development of society's nutrition and healthy living awareness for 15 years since its establishment, draws attention to the importance of "food literacy" on World Food Day. Through its activities in this scope, the Foundation promotes the correct reading of food labels, the selection of fruits and vegetables according to season, the prevention of food waste, planned shopping, and diverse and balanced nutrition.
Sabri Ülker Foundation Chairman Dr. Talat İçöz noted that their vision for food literacy also aligns with World Food Day's theme of "Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future." Noting that access to adequate and safe food is a fundamental human right, İçöz continued his remarks as follows:
"Balanced nutrition habits are shaped by correct information and informed choices. Food literacy means that individuals take responsibility not only for themselves, but also for the future of our society and our world. Through studies such as the Food Literacy Research we conduct in collaboration with the European Food Information Council (EUFIC), we evaluate society's level of nutrition and health literacy; we contribute to the development of effective strategies in this field. Guided by science, while working to promote a balanced, safe and sustainable nutrition culture across all segments of society, we will continue with determination to increase food literacy, which we view as an area of social responsibility."
