A New Era in Collagen Supplements: The Age of Plant-Based Collagen Begins

Collagen is a key structural protein that is naturally synthesized by the body at a young age and supports the integrity of many structures, from skin tissue and joints to the liver and teeth. However, collagen production decreases significantly with age. For this reason, external supplementation is recommended in cases of insufficient collagen synthesis.

Collagen is a fundamental structural protein naturally synthesized by the body in younger years that supports the integrity of numerous structures ranging from skin tissue to joints, liver to teeth. However, collagen production declines significantly with age. For this reason, external supplementation is recommended in cases where insufficient collagen synthesis occurs.

Orzax Medikal Director Dr. Gamze Kavas noted that collagen supplements are mostly derived from animal sources, emphasizing that this situation creates a significant usage restriction particularly for vegan and vegetarian individuals as well as those with allergies or intolerances to animal collagen peptides. Dr. Kavas also recalled that according to research, approximately 30 out of every 1,000 people in Turkey adopt a vegan diet.

Plant-Based Collagen Peptides: A New Alternative
Dr. Kavas drew attention to the fact that allergen-free vegan collagen peptides derived from plant sources such as peas and rice have emerged as a strong alternative in recent years, making the following assessments:

"Plant-based collagen peptides can stimulate collagen production by exerting a signal peptide-like effect on fibroblast cells. This mechanism provides an important advantage in supporting collagen synthesis."

The literature indicates that plant-based peptides can provide effective support for muscle and connective tissue thanks to their essential amino acid profile, high digestibility and protein quality, and can be used in combination with or as an alternative to animal collagen.

The Importance of Synergistic Vitamin & Mineral Combinations
It is also emphasized that collagen supplements with plant-based ingredients not only increase collagen production but provide broader-ranging benefits. According to Dr. Kavas:

-Vitamin B12 is one of the micronutrients most frequently deficient, particularly in vegan individuals.

-Vitamin C acts as one of the fundamental building blocks of collagen synthesis.

-Vitamin D3 plays a critical role in skin barrier function and immune system health.

-Zinc ranks among key components in connective tissue metabolism.

For this reason, the selection of a combination of plant-based collagen peptides with B12, vitamin C, vitamin D3 and zinc in vegan formulations is noted to provide comprehensive benefits in terms of skin health and connective tissue integrity.

Vegan Collagen Supplements: A Next-Generation Approach
Recent scientific evaluations show that plant-based peptides provide a safe and effective alternative to animal collagen thanks to their amino acid profile, high bioavailability and allergen-free composition. Vegan formulations stand out as a next-generation solution particularly for individuals who cannot use animal collagen due to lifestyle preferences or allergies.
