Eti Bakır Publishes Climate and Nature Report, a First in Türkiye's Mining Sector
Eti Bakır, a Cengiz Holding group company, has achieved a first in Türkiye's mining sector by publishing the "Climate and Nature-Related Risk and Opportunity Assessment Report 2025," which addresses climate and nature-related risks and opportunities together. Covering the company's eight facilities, the report evaluates the effects of climate change and nature loss on production processes, as well as the opportunities in these areas, with a holistic approach.

Prepared by Eti Bakır, which meets approximately 25 percent of Türkiye's copper needs, the report was based on data from the period 1 January–31 December 2025. The study, which covers eight facilities in Samsun, Mazıdağı, Küre, Adıyaman, Siirt, Murgul, Cerattepe and İzmir, focuses on addressing climate and nature-related risks in the mining and metals sector from the perspective of production continuity and long-term value creation.

A production model in harmony with nature
Eti Bakır General Manager Asım Akbaş stated that they regard sustainability not merely as the management of environmental impacts, but as a strategic element that determines the capacity to create long-term value.

Noting that COP31 being held in Türkiye presents an important opportunity for addressing the fight against climate change through concrete applications in the real sector's production processes, Akbaş said that Cengiz Holding's approach to climate change is shaped around the efficient use of resources, strengthening the circular economy, increasing the use of renewable energy, protecting water resources and supporting natural life.

Akbaş emphasized that the report, which covers Eti Bakır's eight facilities, evaluates climate and nature-related risks and opportunities not only in terms of environmental impacts, but also in terms of production continuity and long-term value creation.

Circular economy applications in mining
While the report examines Eti Bakır's integrated production model from a nature and climate perspective, the production chain between Küre–Mazıdağı–Samsun stands out. The utilization of material generated at one facility as raw material at other plants contributes to reducing the use of natural resources and strengthening the circular economy.

At the Samsun Smelting and Electrolysis Plant, metal-containing residual products and sulfur dioxide generated from processes are re-evaluated within the scope of the integrated production model. While these inputs are used in the production of cathode copper, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and fertilizer, the facility recovers approximately 5,919 tons of copper and 680,000 tons of sulfuric acid annually.

Need for 54.4 hectares of new land prevented
At the Mazıdağı Metal Recovery and Integrated Fertilizer Facilities, approximately 500,000 tons of secondary raw material are recovered annually. This application prevents the potential need for a new mining area of approximately 54.4 hectares.

The facility also carries out fertilizer production providing an import substitution of approximately 528,000 tons annually. Thanks to the use of renewable electricity, it contributes to the generation of 85,809 MWh of electricity annually and the prevention of 53,562 tons of carbon emissions. The amount of emissions prevented is expressed as equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of approximately 11,600 passenger vehicles.

Fuel savings achieved in logistics
Logistics processes also occupy an important place in Eti Bakır's climate and nature-focused applications. The cableway system used at the Cerattepe Facility reduces the need for road transportation, contributing to the prevention of approximately 1 million liters of fuel consumption and related emissions annually.

At the Murgul Facility, the use of renewable electricity contributes to the prevention of 29,877 tons of carbon emissions. As part of rehabilitation efforts, more than 1 million square meters of land has been restored to nature since 2006, and more than 815,000 saplings have been planted.

92 percent of water recovered at Küre
Küre is one of the facilities where applications aimed at the efficient use of natural resources stand out. At the facility, approximately 92 percent of process water is recovered and reused.

In addition, the recovery of approximately 250,000 tons of pyrite waste annually contributes to reducing the need for new primary mining activities and additional waste storage infrastructure.

Eti Bakır's report notes that closed-loop process water systems have been widely implemented across facilities, achieving water recovery rates ranging from 80 percent to 95 percent depending on the facility.

While the report presents Eti Bakır's approach to addressing risks related to climate change and nature loss together with production processes, it also draws attention to the importance of resource efficiency, circular economy, water management, renewable energy and rehabilitation efforts in mining activities.
