Leadership in the Age of Artificial Intelligence Will Be Determined by Human Judgment and Critical Thinking

A new study from CEMS, the International Association of Business Schools of which Koç University School of Business is a member, comprising the world's best 33 business schools, has been released. The research reveals that in the age of artificial intelligence, the most critical factor that will distinguish future leaders is human reasoning, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making skills.

Released at a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming widespread in the business world, the report titled "Augmented Leadership: Leadership in the New Age of Intelligence" acknowledges that generative AI tools have the potential to increase productivity and creativity, while cautioning that over-reliance on these tools could weaken competencies that employers value most. According to the report, artificial intelligence should not be positioned as an "autopilot" but rather as a "co-pilot" that enhances human insight.

The report was prepared with contributions from multinational companies that are corporate and academic partners of CEMS and senior representatives of leading international universities. The study sheds light on how leadership understanding must evolve in a world dominated by artificial intelligence. Experts emphasize that the question should no longer be "Will artificial intelligence take my job?" but rather "How can artificial intelligence help me do my job better?"

The greatest risk for future leaders: Warning against over-reliance
The report emphasizes that artificial intelligence is not a team member or colleague and cannot replace human reasoning. It is noted that the real risk for future leaders is technological complacency and excessive dependence on artificial intelligence. According to experts, completely outsourcing thinking and decision-making processes to artificial intelligence can lead to the erosion of individual competencies in the long term.

A roadmap for leaders, educators and young professionals: "Think first, then write the prompt"
The CEMS report provides a clear roadmap for the business world and education ecosystem. Accordingly, leaders must not only use artificial intelligence tools but also understand how these technologies work and what limitations they have. Centering human reasoning in decision-making processes, running outputs from artificial intelligence through a critical filter, and structuring thought beforehand are among the fundamental elements of effective leadership.

From the perspective of educators, the report recommends that students first develop their own ideas and use generative artificial intelligence to question and deepen these ideas. For early-career professionals, it is important to question the answers provided by artificial intelligence, compare different perspectives, and reframe questions. CEMS's approach in this context is clear: the key to making a difference in the age of artificial intelligence is to think first, then write the prompt.

Dr. Eda Aksoy, CEMS MIM Academic Director at Koç University School of Business, commented on the research findings: "While this report presents the implications of artificial intelligence in the business world with data, it reminds us that some fundamental questions are more important than ever: Where are we placing humans in this transformation? Since the Industrial Revolution, every technological breakthrough has transformed production; however, when we move away from the goals of providing 'meaningful work' and protecting 'human dignity', the risks of human labor becoming instrumental and work becoming dehumanized have shown how serious problems can arise. We should neither view artificial intelligence as a magic wand that will solve all problems on its own, nor as a threat in itself. If we use artificial intelligence to take over routine tasks, allowing people to devote more time to creativity, collaboration, empathy and strategic thinking, we can turn it into a strategic lever that also strengthens the human side of work. To achieve this by demonstrating the necessary institutional values, vision and commitment to manage this transformation is the responsibility of business leaders. As Koç University, we aim to educate our students not just as users of artificial intelligence, but as young leaders who manage it responsibly by questioning its historical, organizational and ethical dimensions. We brought this approach to life at Marenostrum 2025, where we hosted Mediterranean schools in the CEMS network transformatively in Istanbul. Our students worked on real business cases with corporate partners such as Beko, Henkel and Kearney, developing both their artificial intelligence skills and gaining the opportunity to experience how they can integrate this technology into teamwork, leadership and decision-making processes in a responsible and human-centered manner."
