University Students Develop Virtual Reality-Supported Language Learning App

Istanbul Bilgi University Computer Engineering Department students Muhammet Emir Başoğul, Onur Gök and Medet Ali Halı have developed a language learning application supported by 3D Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology, offering those who want to learn a foreign language the opportunity to practice in a virtual environment.

Computer Engineering students at Istanbul Bilgi University Muhammet Emir Başoğul, Onur Gök and Medet Ali Halı developed a language learning application supported by 3D Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) that enables users to practice in a virtual environment to learn foreign languages.

The application called "Linviva" makes the language learning process more effective and engaging by analyzing grammar and pronunciation errors through artificial intelligence-powered virtual characters and offering suggestions.

The project, realized under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Dalyan from the Computer Engineering Department at BİLGİ, aims to enable users to develop language skills by interacting with artificial intelligence-supported virtual characters using 3D Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies.

Users can learn languages in a virtual world
"Linviva," which brings innovation to language learning through AR and VR, offers users a unique language learning experience where they can move in virtual environments and interact with objects using their hands. In this virtual world, users can practice as if exposed to a foreign language in real life by being in areas such as a cafe or train station.

In the application, while chatting with artificial intelligence-supported virtual characters, users' grammar and pronunciation errors are analyzed instantly and correct usage suggestions are provided. Users of the application have the chance to learn not just sentence patterns but also varied and authentic uses of the language.

Linviva offers accessible language practice for everyone
Based on the "immersion" method, one of the most effective ways to learn languages, Linviva aims to provide this experience in a virtual environment for users who do not have the opportunity to travel abroad. With its prototype presented in English, Linviva aims to be adapted to different languages in later stages and made accessible to everyone. Users can experience the application through VR goggles or AR-enabled smartphones. "Linviva" also includes gamification features to increase motivation during language learning, and users can personalize the appearance of virtual characters.
