Global Food Security Index 2016 Results

DuPont, a science company providing first-class innovative products, materials and services to the global market, supports the 2016 Global Food Security Index, developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The results were announced on 9 June. Turkey ranked 45th among 113 countries and 8th among 15 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Since 2012, the Global Food Security Index has annually measured countries' developments in food security under the categories of Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety. The index measures the agricultural investments, collaborations, policies and impacts of 113 countries according to 28 different food security indicators. Turkey's strongest area in 2016 was also "Quality & Safety". Turkey's score on the Global Food Security Index declined by 0.5 points compared to 2015, placing it at 45th. According to the index results, Turkey achieved its highest score in the Quality & Safety category with 69.9 points, while experiencing a 1.0 point decline in Availability and a 0.2 point decline in Affordability. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region results, Turkey ranked 8th among 15 countries in Availability, 7th in Affordability, and 5th in Quality & Safety, its strongest area, after Israel, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman. According to the index, Turkey's strengths in food security appear to be in the categories of nutritional standards, food safety, improvements in the proportion of population below the global hunger threshold, the existence of food security programs and access to farmer financing programs. It was also noted that Turkey showed improvement in urban absorption capacity and GDP categories compared to the previous year. The largest point loss occurred in the political stability risk category.
