TÜSEB awards future Aziz Sancar laureates The Presidency of Turkey Health Institutes has named 5 scientists as recipients this year of the incentive awards given to scientists under 40 in the name of Nobel laureate Aziz Sancar. The awardees, who have proven they have the qualifications to make important international-level contributions to health science and technologies in the future, are Prof. Dr. Mehmet Lütfi Yola, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Çukur, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Şişmanlar Eyüboğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işıl Gazioğlu and Dr. Ahmet Acar. Prof. Dr. Yola recently developed a system for early diagnosis of COVID-19, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çukur's work focuses on applications of deep learning techniques in biology and medicine. ANKARA (AA) - BURCU ÇALIK - The Presidency of Turkey Health Institutes (TÜSEB) has named 5 scientists as recipients this year of the incentive awards given to scientists under 40 in the name of Nobel laureate Aziz Sancar. The TÜSEB Aziz Sancar Incentive Award is presented annually by TÜSEB to scientists who have proven they have the qualifications to make important international-level contributions to health science and technologies in the future and who have not exceeded 40 years of age on the first day of the year in which the award is given. According to information obtained by AA, the names of this year's awardees were announced recently. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Lütfi Yola from Gaziantep Hasan Kalyoncu University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Çukur from Bilkent University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Şişmanlar Eyüboğlu from Gazi University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işıl Gazioğlu from Bezmialem Vakıf University and Dr. Ahmet Acar from METU were selected for the incentive award. In this award program, which individuals may apply to or be nominated for a maximum of three times, each person receives TRY 30,000.

Developed early diagnosis system for COVID-19

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Lütfi Yola, born in 1983 and an instructor at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Sciences at Hasan Kalyoncu University, received the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) Outstanding Young Scientist Award (GEBİP) for his contributions to science through biosensors developed in 2019 that can instantly predict heart attack and lung cancer risk and are harmless to human health and the environment. Most recently, Prof. Dr. Yola developed a biosensor methodology that measures the cytokine storm that causes the body's immune system fighting coronavirus to go out of control and enables early action.

Conducting research on innovative biomedical imaging

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Çukur, an instructor at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University who conducts research on innovative biomedical imaging and applications of machine and deep learning techniques in biology and medicine, is the recipient of the 2017 IEEE Turkey Research Incentive Award, 2017 Science Heroes Association Young Scientist Award, 2015 TÜBA Outstanding Young Scientist Award, as well as the 2015 EMBO Installation Grant and 2013 Marie Curie Reintegration Grant. Çukur graduated from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University as top of his class in 2003 and completed his master's and doctorate at Stanford University's Department of Electrical Engineering with a Stanford Graduate Fellowship. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California Berkeley. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Şişmanlar Eyüboğlu, an instructor at the Department of Pediatric Health and Diseases, Division of Pediatric Chest Diseases at Gazi University School of Medicine, conducts research on chronic childhood lung diseases, cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, sleep disorders in children, interstitial lung diseases in childhood and tuberculosis. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işıl Gazioğlu, an instructor at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy at Bezmialem Vakıf University, conducts research in analytical chemistry, life sciences and biotechnology, while Dr. Ahmet Acar, an instructor at the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Letters and Sciences at METU, conducts research in health sciences. Awards to be presented at HIMSS'21 Eurasia Health Science and Technologies Conference The awards will be presented to the scientists who earned the TÜSEB Aziz Sancar Incentive Award at the HIMSS'21 Eurasia Health Informatics and Technologies Conference and Fair to be held in Antalya on 17-19 November this year. At the conference organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and HIMSS USA, health ministry officials, public, university and private healthcare facility managers and health informatics professionals from the region's countries will gather once again this year. The conference, which will be open to the private sector, universities and civil society organizations, will address new applications and developments in the changing and evolving field of health informatics.
