Bostik Promises "4-Hour Protection" in Fire Insulation

There are two main methods for fire protection: active and passive. Active protection involves mechanical or electronic systems to extinguish fires. With passive methods, the primary objective is to prevent structural collapse, maintain the building's overall integrity, and prevent fire from spreading to other parts of the structure. Bostik "Passive Fire Sealant" products promise protection from gases and toxic smoke for up to 4 hours during a fire. The main reason fires pose significant risks in all living spaces—residential buildings, shopping centers, hospitals, schools, hotels, factories, metros and elsewhere—is insufficient preventive measures. Yet protecting against fire is very inexpensive when compared with fire consequences. When structures are designed with fire sealant products, strong protection is established from the outset. Bostik passive fire sealant systems: • Minimize the risk of fire outbreak and spread. • Save lives by providing time to safely evacuate occupants from the building during a fire. • Reduce potential material damage. • Protect building construction. Bostik fire-protection products were developed to the highest standards with the understanding that there is no second chance in a fire. They were tested and approved by internationally accredited test laboratories. Bostik passive fire protection products reduce flame, heat and smoke spread in expansion and construction joints, openings and fire passages between compartments, creating safety areas during a fire.

How do Bostik passive fire sealant products increase the building's fire safety?

Bostik FireSeal:

A neutral-cure, medium-modulus silicone joint sealant resistant to fire passage for up to 4 hours. It provides excellent adhesion to many surfaces including stone walls, does not sag in joints up to 25 mm wide and is suitable for use on exterior facades. Bostik FireSeal can be used in both moving and static joints (for example, in screens, partition walls and structural walls for open butt joints). It is effective as a sealant in both cables and metal pipes, particularly in locations with movement factors (for example, hot/cold water pipes).

Bostik Intucrylic:

A fire-retardant acrylic structural sealant containing high-quality polymer additives. It adheres flawlessly to many building materials used in construction. This product swells when exposed to fire, becoming a fire-resistant insulation material that blocks smoke and flame passage. Bostik Intucrylic is used for sealing expansion and structural joints in locations where movement factors are present. It is used as an insulation component in joints during installation of fire-resistant flooring systems, to fill gaps between fire-resistant building materials and window and door frames, and as a sealant around both cables and pipes.

Bostik Expanding Foam:

An expanding foam sealant resistant to fire passage for up to 4 hours. It is a single-component polyurethane foam that self-cures by absorbing moisture from the air. Semi-rigid in nature, it is difficult to bend yet allows for vibration and joint movement. It has been tested to BS 476 Section 20 to provide complete fire evaluation. It also complies with DIN 4102, B1 and B2. It adheres excellently to wood, brick, stone, concrete, plaster, asbestos, drywall, duralite and metal surfaces.

Intustrip:

A soft-adhesive, pre-formed strip sealant developed for use as a compression gasket in fire-sensitive applications. The strips are made from hydrocarbon rubber. When exposed to flame or another heat source, special additives it contains cause it to swell and expand, becoming an insulation material resistant to smoke and flame passage. Bostik Intustrip is supplied in roll form to make product application easy and economical. It can be used in glass beds and compression gaskets in window frames and doors.
