Boğaziçi University Team Wins TÜBA Award for Hermetic Micro-Battery Innovation

Boğaziçi University is developing hermetically sealed micro-batteries for use in critical fields such as healthcare, defense and disaster-response technologies. With applications ranging from capsule endoscopy, electronic pills and medical diagnostic micro-devices to micro-robotic systems and UAVs, these batteries meet requirements for safety, long operating life and high performance despite their small volume.

Boğaziçi University is developing hermetically sealed micro-batteries for use in critical areas such as healthcare, defense and disaster technologies. These batteries, which find application ranging from capsule endoscopy, electronic pills and diagnostic medical micro-devices to micro-robotic systems and unmanned aerial vehicles, meet security, long operating time and high-performance requirements despite their small volume.

Boğaziçi University is developing hermetically sealed micro-batteries for micro-scale energy solutions required in critical areas such as healthcare, defense and disaster technologies. Alongside capsule endoscopy, electronic pills and diagnostic medical micro-devices, these batteries are emerging as an important energy source for advanced medical systems, micro-robotic structures used in post-disaster interventions, and micro-robots and unmanned aerial vehicles used in the defense industry. In fields where security and long operating time are as critical as size, the developed micro-batteries aim to provide a high-performance and reliable solution.

Boğaziçi University has added another project to its research in advanced technology and engineering. Within the scope of the 'Micro-Battery Design Project,' the university aims to develop hermetically sealed micro-batteries at dimensions smaller than integrated circuit boards on credit cards.

In areas where the size, security and sealing limitations of conventional battery solutions have become evident, micro-batteries carry the potential to meet high-security, long-term operation and micro-scale integration requirements. Within this scope, the project addresses a critical engineering problem by focusing on micro-battery design.

Hermetic Design: The Key to Safety and Stability
Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Nurullah Ateş, one of the conductors of the said R&D work and continuing his academic studies in the Chemistry Department of Boğaziçi University, made the following statements regarding the project:

"Micro-batteries carry effective solution potential in areas where safety, long-term operation and micro-scale integration needs have become evident. For this reason, in our project we place micro-battery design at the center. Through the hermetic sealing approach, by controlling the battery's interaction with the environment, we aim to support the safety and stability goals that are critical especially in medical applications. This multi-layered R&D project creates a domestic infrastructure for a wide range of applications spanning from medical technologies to disaster conditions and the defense industry."

Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Ateş from TÜBA
Assoc. Prof. Ateş, who was recognized by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) with the Outstanding Young Scientist (GEBİP) Award for his work on micro-battery design, said: "This award is meaningful feedback highlighting the scientific value of the research we are pursuing. In interdisciplinary fields such as micro-battery design, teams need to progress in a sustained and meticulous manner. The research environment at Boğaziçi University makes it possible to address such challenging problems."
