Aksa Enerji Raises Installed Capacity in Ghana to 549 MW

Aksa Enerji has completed the transition to combined-cycle operation in the first phase of the Kumasi Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant it constructed in Ghana, which has an installed capacity of 179 MW. Since January, the plant has been operating commercially as a simple-cycle facility with 130 MW capacity, and thanks to the conversion completed, it has begun generating electricity with higher efficiency.

Together with the company's 370 MW capacity Tema Power Plant, total installed capacity in Ghana has increased to 549 MW. The Kumasi Power Plant, which is being developed in two phases, is planned to reach 350 MW installed capacity upon completion. The project is financed and constructed by Aksa Enerji under a 20-year US dollar-based guaranteed power purchase agreement, while operation and maintenance activities are also carried out by the company.

Thanks to combined-cycle technology, the plant will be able to generate more electricity using the same amount of natural gas. The aim is to provide Ghana's national electricity grid with more efficient, reliable and sustainable energy.

In addition to energy investments, Aksa Enerji contributes to local employment in the countries where it operates. The company employs over 130 local staff in its Ghana operations, with local employees constituting 64% of the total workforce. It also supports the development of local human resources by transferring the technical knowledge accumulated from more than 40 power plants it has built to date to engineers and technicians in the region.

In his assessment of the matter, Aksa Enerji Chief Executive Officer and Board Chairman Naci Ağbal noted that energy supply security holds strategic importance in countries' development, and stated that the conversion of the Kumasi Power Plant to combined-cycle operation has provided Ghana's energy infrastructure with a higher efficiency system. Ağbal emphasized that the company will continue its long-term investments supporting sustainable development in the geographies where it operates, particularly in Africa.
