Clariant Unveils New-Generation Phosphate Esters for Metalworking Formulations
Clariant, a leading supplier of sustainable content and solutions for the Industrial Oils segment, has introduced a new and innovative phosphate ester that delivers exceptional performance and superior sustainability in metal processing fluid formulations.
Hostaphat 1738 combines extreme pressure performance with an excellent low-foam profile and strong emulsification properties. It can be incorporated into semi-synthetic, synthetic, soluble oil and straight oil formulations, making it the primary choice for formulators and production managers seeking ease of use in these diverse metal processing applications.
Hostaphat 1738 also offers superior sustainability properties. It is 50% bio-based due to the natural alcohol used, and contains significantly less phosphorus than standard phosphate esters.

"The theory that more is better—the assumption that an ester needs higher phosphorus content to perform better in terms of lubricity—is commonly held in our industry. We have demonstrated with Hostaphat 1738 that this does not have to be the case, achieving the same performance as esters with higher phosphorus content that could harm machinery and the environment," he said. The product development team, based on Clariant's low-foaming surfactant series, worked to further develop this chemistry to function as an extreme pressure additive that also enhances the performance of emulsifiers. This provides metal processing fluid manufacturers and formulators with an additional tool to improve lubricity, emulsion stability and performance with a single multifunctional product. McManus concluded his remarks with: "Hostaphat 1738 offers benefits across the entire lifecycle of metal processing fluid. It helps reduce foam and increase efficiency, its stability extends the working life of a product, and when it comes time for treatment and disposal, the reduction in phosphorus minimizes environmental impact, so it truly has an impact on performance and sustainability from cradle to grave."
