Shimadzu has introduced the new generation IRSpirit Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer series to FTIR users. The highly compact IRSpirit, IRSpirit-T and IRSpirit-L models meet the needs of different users. The instrument is used with a dedicated IR Pilot program that enables the use of a wide range of application options. Despite its compact design, IRSpirit features a spacious sample compartment that allows compatibility with third-party accessories. The instrument is used with a program offering 23 application-specific workflows. Depending on their needs and conditions, users can choose either the IRSpirit-T, which offers sensitivity equivalent to standard Shimadzu models, or the more economical IRSpirit-L model.

Design and Product Development Process

FTIR systems detect infrared light transmitted or reflected through a sample and then use a Fourier transform process to determine the wavelength components in this light. These systems are used for applications such as identifying substances in samples, measuring them, or predicting their chemical structures. In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in demand for compact and portable models due to their smaller laboratory footprint. At the same time, users show interest in systems that are easy to use and allow for the addition of new accessories. For these reasons, the new product development process addressed both hardware and software features. Although IRSpirit is one-third the size of Shimadzu's standard FTIR model, the sample compartment width was designed to be identical to the standard model. Software developed with a new program aims to enable even users with beginner-level analytical experience to obtain high-quality data. The instrument is particularly suitable for pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries and university laboratories.System Features

1. Compact and Functional

The instrument's installation dimensions are 390 mm wide and 250 mm deep, smaller than an A3 sheet of paper, and the main unit weighs only 8.5 kg. Despite its compact size, it features a large sample compartment capable of accommodating existing Shimadzu or third-party accessories. IRSpirit is thus the smallest and lightest FTIR system that allows the use of optional accessories from other manufacturers. Furthermore, thanks to its unique design, the instrument can be placed vertically in confined spaces, the main unit can be rotated 90 degrees, and thus the side surface measuring 250 mm wide can be directed forward. This allows samples to be processed on the instrument in horizontal and vertical positions.

2. IR Pilot Program with 23 Application-Specific Workflows

The IR Pilot program, which enables rapid and easy system use, includes 23 application programs as standard. With the newly developed program, users can quickly launch workflows for applications such as identification tests, contaminant analysis, quantitative analysis, and film thickness calculations. The program can be initiated by selecting appropriate objectives and techniques for analysis. This makes it possible for even inexperienced FTIR users to conduct analysis easily. The program also includes a function for recording previously performed analyses, which means simplifying the process for frequently performed analyses.

3. Optimization of System Configurations for Specific Purposes and Operating Environment

The window plate can be replaced with a special plate that protects the instrument's optics from high temperature and humidity. The system becomes suitable for contaminant analysis with Shimadzu's unique contaminant library or thermally degraded plastics library. IRSpirit can be controlled with Shimadzu's LabSolutions analytical data management system along with the IR Pilot program. This enables integrated management of data from different manufacturers' analytical instruments across a network.

Technical Specifications:

• IRSpirit-T model: DLATGS temperature-controlled detector, • IRSpirit-L model: LiTaO3 detector, • Ceramic light source with 3-year warranty, • Temperature-controlled laser source with 6-year warranty, • Wavenumber range: 7800-350 cm-1, • 0.9 cm-1 maximum resolution value. FTIR systems are used in different application areas such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, polymers, construction chemicals and environment for many analyses including contaminant analysis, raw material acceptance tests, identification tests, quantitative analysis and spectral analysis. With its compact design, various model and accessory options, and user-friendly IR Pilot software, IRSpirit will bring a fresh perspective to FTIR analysis.   Senior Chemist Müjde Bilgin Sales Engineer Ant Teknik Cihazlar Ltd.
