Evonik and VoltH2 Pioneer Green Hydrogen in Delfzijl

Evonik has signed an agreement with the Dutch company VoltH2 to develop green hydrogen production at its Delfzijl chemical plant.

Evonik signed an agreement with Dutch company VoltH2 to develop green hydrogen production at its Delfzijl chemical facility. Under the agreement, VoltH2 will build a 50 MW electrolyzer near Evonik's hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plant. Evonik will thus cover a significant portion of its hydrogen needs from the electrolyzer, which is scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2027. The facility will be the first industrial-scale green hydrogen water electrolysis plant in northern Netherlands.

During this transition period, Evonik's remaining hydrogen requirements will continue to be met through conventional hydrogen production at its own facilities. This solution will enable uninterrupted supply until green hydrogen capacity reaches levels that fully meet demand. VoltH2 will also build a tube trailer filling station at Evonik's facilities. Hydrogen in tube trailers will be supplied to VoltH2's other customers around the clock.

With this partnership, Evonik aims to advance its own sustainability targets while establishing, together with VoltH2, the foundation for a broader hydrogen network in this important industrial hub.
Peter Metten, General Manager of Evonik Peroxide Netherlands, explained: "We want to shift our production completely to renewable sources. By introducing green hydrogen at our Delfzijl facility, we are taking an important step toward this goal. Because producing H2O2 requires three critical resources: electricity, steam, and hydrogen. It is easier to find sustainable solutions for the first two. Sourcing green hydrogen is the challenging part. Fortunately, in VoltH2 we found a partner with the best local resources, technical expertise, and vision for collaboration toward a cleaner and greener industry."

VoltH2 Founder and General Manager André Jurres emphasizes the importance of Delfzijl's unique position in the emerging green hydrogen economy: "Through this integrated systems approach, large industrial companies like Evonik demonstrate how to optimize the use of sustainable electricity and natural allies like green hydrogen production. The long-term commitment of Evonik and VoltH2 demonstrates the feasibility of achieving significant carbon emission reductions at scale in the coming years."

Christoph Batz-Sohn, Director of Sustainable Transformation in Evonik's Active Oxygen business line, adds: "This is an example of how partnerships are key to sustainable transformation. A greener future will require the combined expertise and commitment of companies across sectors and industries. Ideally, this joint venture with VoltH2 will serve as a model for similar partnerships at our other production facilities worldwide."
