Covestro Successfully Completes Renewal of TDI Plant in Dormagen

Covestro has successfully completed the modernization of its TDI (Toluene Diisocyanate) plant in Dormagen. At an event attended by around 60 guests from politics, business and the company's workforce, including North Rhine-Westphalia Environment Minister Oliver Krischer, Covestro officially commissioned the plant and announced its new target for improving energy efficiency in production.

Covestro has successfully completed the modernization of its TDI (toluene diisocyanate) facility in Dormagen. At an event attended by approximately 60 guests from politics, business and company employees, including North Rhine-Westphalia Environment Minister Oliver Krischer, Covestro formally commissioned the facility and announced its new target to increase energy efficiency in production.

Dr. Philip Bahke, Head of the North Rhine-Westphalia Plant Network, stated: "The successful completion of this project demonstrates that climate protection efforts and competitiveness can go hand in hand. The modernized facility sets new standards in energy efficiency and underscores our path toward climate-neutral production. In light of continuously high energy costs, this project significantly strengthens the competitiveness of TDI production in Europe. I wish to express my special thanks to the entire project team who professionally executed this complex modernization during ongoing operations."

The modernized facility consumes 80% less energy compared to conventional processes, reducing annual CO₂ emissions by 22,000 tons. This is made possible by a new reactor weighing approximately 150 tons (330,700 lbs) and measuring 20 meters (65.6 feet) in height. The reactor uses energy generated during the reaction for steam production. Covestro began the modernization work in summer 2023. The project included installation of more than 3.5 kilometers of new piping, approximately 14 kilometers of cable and hundreds of new equipment, valves and monitoring instruments.

During the event, Covestro also announced its new target for increasing energy efficiency in global production. The company aims to reduce CO₂ emissions from energy use per unit of product produced by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020. This target underscores the central role of energy efficiency in Covestro's strategy to achieve operational climate neutrality by 2035. The Dormagen TDI facility, with annual production capacity of 300,000 tons, is presented as a successful example of transforming existing production facilities toward higher energy efficiency.
