7 Effective Drug-Free Treatment Methods for Fibromyalgia

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Prof. Dr. Ece Aydoğ described 7 effective methods that stand out in drug-free treatment and that should also be applied by those using medication, and made important warnings and recommendations.

Prof. Dr. Ece Aydoğ, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist, outlined 7 effective non-pharmaceutical treatment methods that stand out in drug-free therapy and which medication users must also apply, offering important warnings and recommendations.

Do you wake up tired every morning, experiencing pain especially in your neck, lower back and upper back, and sometimes throughout your entire body, and do you struggle to carry out your daily activities? Prof. Dr. Ece Aydoğ, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist at Acıbadem Kozyatağı Hospital, notes that this condition, commonly seen worldwide, is fibromyalgia, stating "This disease, which is much more prevalent in women than men and is increasingly seen in children in recent years, severely affects daily quality of life, can lead to depression causing deterioration in social relationships and reduced success in school and work life. We can classify the treatment of this disease into pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical methods. However, even if medication is used, it alone will be insufficient, and non-pharmaceutical treatment methods must be applied alongside it."

Emphasizing that fibromyalgia has no single treatment type and therapy must be tailored to each individual's needs, Prof. Dr. Aydoğ states "Fibromyalgia treatment is a difficult disease. Limited knowledge about the cause of the disease and the lack of response to conventional painkillers makes treatment challenging. Firstly, fibromyalgia must be accepted as a genuine disease, patients must be informed about the disease, and they must be taught how to manage it."

• Perform light-paced, regular exercise
Regular exercise (aerobic exercises, muscle-strengthening exercises, water-based exercises, etc.), one of the most effective methods in fibromyalgia treatment, strengthens muscles, reduces pain, regulates communication between the brain and body, and improves sleep quality. Rather than strenuous exercise, light-paced walking, swimming, cycling, yoga or pilates is beneficial.

• Limit caffeine
Prof. Dr. Ece Aydoğ states "Sleep regulation is very important in fibromyalgia treatment. Since the majority of fibromyalgia patients cannot achieve deep sleep throughout the night, this causes a lowering of the pain threshold and more intense pain sensation. For this reason, avoid excessive caffeine consumption during the day, especially stay away from caffeine-containing beverages in the evenings, avoid snacking during the day, sleep in your own bed and in a dark environment. Also, make sure to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day."

• Pay attention to your diet
Certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly vitamin D, B12 vitamin and magnesium, can increase fibromyalgia pain, so pay attention to your diet and, if necessary, have tests done and supplement missing vitamins on your doctor's recommendation. Avoid refined sugar and processed foods.

• Learn to manage your stress
Stress, an inevitable part of daily life, is beneficial when at a certain level, but excessive, unmanaged stress increases fibromyalgia pain. For this reason, learn to manage your stress and seek expert support if necessary. Breathing therapies and meditation will also be beneficial.

• Seek physical therapy support
Prof. Dr. Ece Aydoğ states "The treatment process must be conducted under medical supervision. Incorrect and unnecessary treatments cause the disease to become more complicated, resulting in financial and emotional losses." Noting that physical therapy methods play a major role in controlling fibromyalgia pain by reducing the load on muscles and the skeletal system, Prof. Dr. Aydoğ says that methods applied by a physiotherapist in sessions determined according to need increase the person's daily quality of life.

• Definitely benefit from daylight
Especially summer sunlight supports vitamin D synthesis in the body, protecting muscle and bone health and helping to alleviate fibromyalgia-related pain. For this reason, especially during the summer months, vitamin D production in the body can be achieved by exposing only the arms and legs to the sun for 15-20 minutes at midday.

• Pay attention to your sitting posture
Sitting in incorrect posture for long periods, especially at a computer, can trigger fibromyalgia pain. Prof. Dr. Ece Aydoğ states "Hunching the shoulders or slouching when working at a desk stretches the muscles and increases pain. For this reason, when sitting at a computer and when standing, make sure to stand upright, keep your shoulders back, and support your lower back with a pillow."
