Tooth Color Provides Important Clues About Health

A smile is not just an aesthetic feature; it also offers important clues about health. Experts point out that discoloration in teeth can be an indicator of many factors, ranging from genetics and diet to lifestyle habits and systemic diseases.

A smile is not merely an aesthetic feature; it also provides important clues about health. Experts point out that discoloration of teeth can be an indicator of many causes, ranging from genetics and diet to lifestyle habits and systemic diseases.

Dr. Ögr. Üyesi Özge Mimir, Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry at Üsküdar University, emphasizes that the complete whiteness of teeth is not a natural condition, stating: "The dentin layer beneath the tooth has a yellowish tone. For this reason, perfectly white teeth alone do not mean 'I am healthy.'"

Causes of Color Changes

Dr. Mimir noted that color changes observed in teeth can be due to multiple causes:

  • Genetic factors: In individuals with thin enamel layers, the yellowish tone may be more pronounced.

  • Lifestyle habits: Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco products lead to yellowing over time.

  • Aging: As dentin darkens, teeth naturally yellow.

  • Medical factors: Certain antibiotics (e.g., tetracycline), metabolic diseases, or excessive fluoride intake can cause different types of discoloration.

  • Local issues: Gray or black discoloration in a single tooth is usually a sign that the nerve is dead and urgent treatment is required.

Mimir also noted that smoking, tartar buildup, prolonged use of mouthwash, and amalgam fillings can also cause brown or gray staining.

Regular Check-ups Are Essential
Dr. Mimir emphasizes that in cases of sudden color change in teeth, darkening of a single tooth, or observation of unusual colors, a dentist should be consulted without delay, stating: "This condition may mean that the living tissues in the teeth have died. Root canal treatment or filling application may be necessary."

Mimir points out that regular brushing, flossing, and professional teeth cleaning are the most effective methods for preventing discoloration, and stresses that whitening procedures must always be performed under dental supervision.
