8 Factors That Trigger Spring Allergies in Children and How to Prevent Them

With the arrival of spring, allergic reactions in some children are also on the rise. Increased pollen, environmental factors and seasonal changes can trigger symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes in particular. Prof. Dr. Gülfer Mehtap Yazıcıoğlu, Pediatric Immunology and Allergic Diseases Specialist at Acıbadem Fulya Hastanesi, notes that spring allergy is not limited to pollen alone, emphasizing that indoor allergens, insect bites and sun exposure can also act as triggers.

With the arrival of spring, allergic reactions are increasing in some children. Rising pollen, environmental factors and seasonal changes can lead to symptoms such as nasal discharge, sneezing, itching and watering of the eyes. Prof. Dr. Gülfer Mehtap Yazıcıoğlu, Paediatric Immunology and Allergy Diseases Specialist at Acıbadem Fulya Hospital, notes that spring allergies are not limited to pollen alone, emphasizing that indoor allergens, insect bites and sun exposure can also be triggers.

Here are 8 important factors that increase spring allergies in children and recommendations:

1. Pollen

Tree, grass and weed pollens are the most common cause of spring allergies. Increased intensity is observed in the morning and afternoon.
Recommendation: Monitor pollen alerts, avoid going outdoors early in the morning and on windy days, change clothes and shower when returning home.

2. Mould Spores

Damp soil and decaying leaves increase allergy risk.
Recommendation: Ventilate the home, keep humidity below 50%, use an air purifier with a HEPA filter.

3. Pet Hair

Shedding pets can raise allergen levels.
Recommendation: Brush pets regularly, reduce hair accumulation, keep them away from the bedroom.

4. Dust Mites

Dust in the air during spring cleaning can trigger allergies.
Recommendation: Wash bedding and linens weekly at 60°C, vacuum carpets and furniture frequently, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

5. Cleaning Products

Some chemical cleaning products can irritate the eyes, nose and respiratory tract.
Recommendation: Use natural products if possible, keep children out of the room during cleaning, ventilate the area well.

6. Insect Bites and Stings

Bee and mosquito stings can cause severe allergic reactions in some children.
Recommendation: Have children wear long sleeves and closed shoes in open areas, stay away from insect nests.

7. Sunlight

Prolonged sun exposure can cause redness and itching on the skin.
Recommendation: Avoid spending long periods outdoors during sunny hours, wear protective clothing and a hat, apply sunscreen SPF 30+.

8. Plants

Contact with certain plants can result in itchy and swollen rashes on the skin.
Recommendation: Wear long sleeves during park or garden activities, wash hands and exposed skin areas after contact.

Prof. Dr. Yazıcıoğlu emphasizes the importance of proper evaluation of allergic symptoms in children during this period and seeking specialist support if necessary.
