Tetra Pak Releases 25th Sustainability Report

Tetra Pak, committed to making food safe and accessible everywhere through an approach that protects people and the planet, has published its 25th Sustainability Report. According to the report, which focuses on five areas—food systems, circularity, climate, nature and social sustainability—Tetra Pak has reduced greenhouse gas emissions in its value chain by 20 percent and emissions in its own operations by 47 percent since 2019.

The 25th Sustainability Report, which reflects progress made in line with Tetra Pak's sustainability agenda, contains striking data. The report highlights the company's achievements in the past year as well as its ongoing initiatives to protect food, people and the planet.

The report shows a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain and a 47 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the company's own operations since 2019. The report also supports Tetra Pak's long-term goals of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050, working together with suppliers, customers and other stakeholders.

"We are committed to doing our part to transform food systems globally"

Tetra Pak President and CEO Adolfo Orive commented on the release of the 25th Sustainability Report: "Collaboration throughout the food industry is more important than ever to sustainably feed a growing population. Our global presence and end-to-end solutions give us opportunities every day to collaborate with all stakeholders in the value chain, from farmers and food producers to suppliers, decision-makers and consumers. We are aware of the responsibility that this role brings. We are committed to doing our part to transform food systems globally, ensuring they are safer, more resilient and more sustainable."

EUR 40 million investment in recycling programs

According to the report, another significant milestone was the launch of an aseptic beverage carton with a paper-based barrier that reduces carbon footprint by one-third (33 percent) and brings Tetra Pak one step closer to developing the world's most sustainable food packaging, with 90 percent renewable content. While EUR 100 million was invested in packaging research and development in 2023, certified refurbished equipment deliveries increased from 106 units in 2022 to 133 units in 2023. Additionally, 1.3 million tonnes of carton packaging was collected and sent for recycling with a 7 percent increase. There was also a 14 percent increase in the volume of polyAl sent for recycling.

The 25th Sustainability Report also revealed the results of improvements made by Tetra Pak in its manufacturing processes. The report announced that a total of 10.4 billion plant-based packages and 12.6 billion plant-based caps were sold, while a 28.9 percent reduction in solvent emissions in production operations was recorded.

Turkey operations included in report

The report also contains information about Tetra Pak's operations in Turkey. Developing food processing technologies that help reduce food loss and waste to transform production process waste into value-added products, Tetra Pak aims to achieve a 50 percent reduction in product loss in processing lines by 2030. In line with this objective, Tetra Pak continued its efforts to reduce food waste in all facilities providing on-site food service in 2023. For example, the Izmir plant donated more than 40 percent of food waste to animal shelters, while the remaining waste was used for energy recovery.

Each of the food systems, circularity, climate, nature and social sustainability areas on which Tetra Pak focuses throughout the report is supported by its 2030 Strategy, which recognizes that sustainability is also an important part across packaging, processing and service operations. Related objectives and targets in these areas are regularly monitored, managed and reported.
