The TAYK-AKPA Naval Forces Cup 53rd Year International Yacht Race Cup, held in Göcek under the main sponsorship of AKPA Kimya, found its winners at the awards ceremony. The race, which is the longest single-stage route conducted in Turkey at 555 nautical miles, saw a total of 32 vessels from Spain, Estonia, Russia, Italy and Turkey competing. Starting at 16:05 in Emirgan with a signal flare fired by Rear Admiral Ercan Kireçtepe, Submarine Attack Commander on behalf of the Northern Sea Area Commander, the race ended in Göcek on 18 July 2024. The race took place under the patronage of the Turkish Naval Forces and with support from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with AKPA Kimya as main sponsor. This year saw changes to the distance and route of the single-stage race. The distance of the single-stage race was increased to 555 nautical miles, while the finish point was moved from Turgutreis to Göcek. Starting from Emirgan, the race followed the Dardanelles Strait, Bozcaada, Lesbos Island, Chios Island, Ahıkerya Island, Rhodes Island and Fethiye Bay, finishing in Göcek on Thursday, 18 July. At the awards ceremony of the race organized under the main sponsorship of AKPA Kimya, the TAYK-AKPA Naval Forces Cup, awarded to the vessel with the best corrected time in the IRC classes, FENERBAHCE 1, was presented to Fenerbahçe Sports Club / Barış Koncagül and team by TAYK Commodore Vedat Tezman and Southern Sea Area Commander Rear Admiral Yalçın Payal. At the awards ceremony, Southern Sea Area Commander Rear Admiral Yalçın Payal stated in his speech that very few people in the world, and very few in Turkey, could accomplish sailing a vessel 555 nautical miles. Recalling that last year marked the 100th anniversary of the Republic and the 250th founding anniversary of the Naval Academy, Payal said, "This story has been continuing for 53 years. This year is also a special year for our country and the Naval Forces Command. It is the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation." TAYK General Director Can Giray stated that a yacht race of this length was being conducted for the first time in Turkey, that competitors starting from the Istanbul Strait successfully completed the race in Göcek, and that the Naval Forces Cup 54th Year races to be held in 2025 would take place on the same route. AKPA Kimya Board Chairman Kemal Darcan congratulated all competitors in Turkey's longest single-stage, challenging race and extended his best wishes for success.
