Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak Accepted as Advisory Board Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemistry, has been accepted as a Fellow Member by The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), a prestigious position in the chemical sciences. Prof. Apak will deliver a presentation at the European Chemical Society shortly after becoming an RSC Fellow Member, and will simultaneously receive his RSC certificate. Prof. Dr. Apak previously earned the TUBITAK Science Award for his important contributions to science through his research work.

Who is Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak?

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Chemistry as a chemical engineer in 1976 and obtained his doctorate degree in 1982; he became a professor in 1993. In administrative roles, he served as dean of the same faculty from 1996 to 1999 and as director of Istanbul University Institute of Marine Sciences from 2007 to 2015. He is the head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Engineering (1990–) and director of the Food Antioxidants Application and Research Center (İÜ-GAAM) under the Istanbul University Rectorate. Prof. Dr. Apak directed projects received from international organizations such as NATO/CCMS, IAEA and TWAS and from national institutions such as the State Planning Organization, TUBITAK, and Istanbul University Research Fund. He currently serves as Turkey's representative in the Analytical Chemistry Division (IUPAC Division V) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). He has authored approximately 700 scientific works in total (including 228 original research articles published in international journals indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI), 10 chapters in international peer-reviewed scientific books and encyclopedias, as well as conference proceedings), and three textbooks in Turkish.

He also edited an English-language book on antioxidant determination, published by Wiley in February 2018. According to Elsevier-Scopus as of July 2018, his publications in SCI-indexed journals have received 6,703 citations (5,833 excluding self-citations) and his h-index is 40.

Seven of his articles have been published in ACS Analytical Chemistry, the journal with the highest impact factor for original research articles in his field. Prof. Dr. Apak's most important discovery, working in diverse fundamental and applied areas of Analytical Chemistry, is the "CUPRAC antioxidant capacity determination method" which he contributed to the global literature in 2004. He is also the inventor of an on-site detection kit and analysis system for explosive residues. He received the "Contribution to the Progress of Chemical Science – Honorary Membership Award" from the Turkish Chemical Society in 2004. On 6 June 2012, he was appointed as a full member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), and since June 2014 has been elected to the Academy Council. On 1 June 2016, he received the "service to science award" granted for the first time by Istanbul University Rectorate. Prof. Apak received the "TUBITAK Science Award," Turkey's largest scientific award, in 2017 for his "outstanding-quality international-level work in fundamental and applied fields of analytical chemistry; use of non-conventional adsorbents in analytical and environmental chemistry; antioxidant chemistry and antioxidant activity/capacity determination; and on-site measurement of energetic materials and their post-explosion residues." He earned the status of "Fellow Member" (Royal Society of Chemistry: RSC-Fellow Member), awarded by The Royal Society of Chemistry to scientists with groundbreaking discoveries in chemistry, on 27 July 2018, and will receive his membership certificate from RSC officials at the 7th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress (26–30 August 2018, Liverpool, United Kingdom) where he is invited as a keynote speaker.
