PPG and HOYA Vision Care Announce Lens Performance Test Results

PPG (NYSE:PPG) announced the results of tests conducted in collaboration with HOYA Vision Care to compare the performance of PPG TRIVEX® lens material with polycarbonate lenses. The data obtained showed that HOYA PHOENIX® lenses produced with PPG Trivex lens material sustained less damage in impact tests, were lighter, offered higher optical clarity, and demonstrated superior chemical resistance compared to polycarbonate lenses.

The data obtained showed that HOYA PHOENIX® lenses manufactured with PPG Trivex lens material sustained less damage in impact tests, were lighter, offered higher optical clarity, and demonstrated superior chemical resistance compared to polycarbonate lenses.
The research was designed to compare the impact performance of polycarbonate, commonly used in prescription eyewear, with PPG Trivex lens material. Additionally, optical properties such as weight, chemical resistance, Abbe value, and birefringence were evaluated alongside data compiled from previous studies. The findings provide a scientific basis for eye care professionals to recommend Trivex lenses as a high-performance alternative to polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate and Trivex lens materials are classified as high-impact resistant under ANSI Z87.1 and FDA industry standards. However, Gardner impact testing revealed that polycarbonate lenses sustained irreversible crazing damage under high impact. Trivex lenses tested under the same conditions showed only minimal surface blemishes, providing additional advantages in demanding applications such as sports and industrial eyewear.
With its high Abbe value, Trivex lenses enhance optical clarity by reducing color fringing visible at the edges (chromatic aberration). Additionally, the cast molding manufacturing process minimizes birefringence, providing sharp and consistent vision across the lens.
In chemical resistance testing, Trivex lens material maintained its stability against prolonged exposure to laboratory solvents, while polycarbonate lenses showed surface damage and yellowing. These advantages mean clear and crisp optics, lightweight comfort, long-lasting performance, and higher patient satisfaction.
