Cargo Volume Handled at Ports Exceeds 135 Million Tons

According to a statement made by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the amount of cargo handled at ports in the first quarter of 2022 increased 9.1% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 135 million 196 thousand tons. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure's Directorate General of Maritime Affairs issued a written statement regarding Cargo and Container Statistics. The statement shared the amounts of cargo handled at ports. According to the shared data, the amount of cargo handled in March increased 5.7% compared to the same period of the previous year and was realized as 46 million 223 thousand tons. The statement also shared that the amount of cargo handled in the first quarter of 2022 increased 9.1% and reached 135 million 196 thousand tons.

Directorate General of Maritime Affairs Cargo and Container Statistics Released

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure shared data in its statement. According to the shared data, foreign trade transportation increased 4.4% compared to the same period of the previous year and rose to 34 million 182 thousand tons. In the statement, the following expressions were used: "In March, the amount of loading for export purposes at our ports increased 3.2% compared to the same month of the previous year to 13 million 574 thousand tons, while the amount of unloading for import purposes increased 5.1% to 20 million 607 thousand tons." It was emphasized that transit cargo transportation reached 6 million 671 thousand tons with a 7.5% increase, and it was also shared that the amount of cargo transported in cabotage showed a 12.4% increase to 5 million 370 thousand tons. In the statement, which noted that a total of 7 million 184 thousand tons of cargo was handled at port facilities operating within the administrative boundaries of Kocaeli Port Authority, it was stated that Kocaeli Port Authority was followed by Aliağa and İskenderun Port Authorities.

Crude Oil Cargo Had the Highest Increase by Volume Handled

The statement also emphasized that crude oil cargo showed the highest increase by volume handled. According to the statement, crude oil cargo is followed by diesel and scrap iron cargo types. In the statement, which highlighted that Portland Cement is the cargo type most exported by sea, it stated: "In March, Crude Oil ranked first among import cargo handled at our ports with 2 million 621 thousand tons. This was followed by scrap iron with 2 million 150 thousand tons and non-briquetted steam coal cargo types with 1 million 547 thousand tons. In exports by sea, the largest cargo handling was realized in shipments to the United States with 1 million 553 thousand tons. The United States was followed by shipments to Italy and Spain. In imports, the largest cargo handling was realized in shipments from Russia with 3 million 747 thousand tons."

Container Volume Handled at Ports in March: 1 Million 68 Thousand TEU

The statement used the expressions that the amount of containers handled at our ports in March 2022 increased 0.6% compared to the same month of the previous year and was realized as 1 million 68 thousand TEU, and emphasized that in the January-March period, the amount of containers handled at ports increased 4.6% compared to the same period of the previous year and was realized as 3 million 187 thousand TEU. The statement noted: "In March, container loadings for export purposes at our ports increased 3.3% to 417 thousand 336 TEU, while container unloadings for import purposes decreased 3.8% to 395 thousand 283 TEU. The amount of transit containers handled increased 6.2% to 185 thousand 505 TEU. The largest container handling took place within the administrative boundaries of Ambarlı Port Authority. A total of 244 thousand 364 TEU of containers were handled at port facilities operating within the administrative boundaries of Ambarlı Port Authority. Ambarlı was followed by Kocaeli and Mersin Port Authorities. The largest container handling was realized in shipments with Egypt. Containers bound for Egypt constituted the largest export container loadings by sea with 59 thousand 18 TEU. Containers arriving from Egypt also constituted the largest container unloading."
