ENSİA to coordinate Carbon Management project

Energy Industrialists and Businessmen Association (ENSİA) will take on the coordination of the "Inter-Cluster Collaboration for Carbon Management" project supported by the European Union. ENSİA, which was a partner with Izmir Development Agency in the Best For Energy project that received EUR 3 million in grant support from the European Union between 2020-2023, became a stakeholder in the BORNBERG Project launched in 2023 in collaboration with Bornova Municipality and Heidelberg Municipality of Germany, aimed at climate adaptation and environmental protection.

The project with a budget of EUR 520,000 will run for three years

The association launched the "Inter-Cluster Collaboration for Carbon Management Project" in 2024. The opening meeting of the project, which began implementation as of 1 January 2024 and will run for three years, will be held on 16 April 2024. During the project period, numerous activities such as trainings, consultations, overseas working visits, workshops, and international summits will be conducted. The project will have a budget of EUR 520,000 and will run for three years. ENSİA Board Chairman Alper Kalaycı stated that the primary objective of the project, which they are conducting in partnership with the Aegean Iron and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters Association (EDDMİB), is to increase the institutional and operational capacities of clusters in carbon management and compliance with CBAM by transferring good practice examples from the EU.

Kalaycı made the following assessment:

"In the project where the Aegean Iron and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters Association and Co.Svi.G. Scrl from Italy are partners, and the Izmir Development Agency (İZKA), İZENERJİ and Eurosolar Türkiye are participants, the goal is to strengthen civil society organizations and exporting sectors by transferring good practice examples from the European Union to Turkey and exchanging knowledge and experience. The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will come into effect as of 1 January 2026, has the potential to damage the competitive structure of high-emission sectors, particularly iron and steel. There is a possibility that 40 percent of Turkey's exports could be adversely affected to varying degrees by this implementation." Noting that ENSİA, which began operations in 2016 with the principle of being a "Project Association," is among the most active civil society organizations in the clean energy sector that create value for its members, Kalaycı recalled that the total employment provided by the association's 129 corporate members exceeds 60,000.

Expressing their satisfaction at participating in the third EU project, Alper Kalaycı said the following about other ongoing projects:

"Our Clean Energy Urgent-Need project, which we own outside of EU projects, continues. Regarding our Clean Energy Cluster Project, which is under review by our Ministry of Industry and will be one of the most comprehensive cluster examples in our country, we will share good news very soon with our members and the public. Our sole focus is to be an NGO that creates value for the clean energy sector and our members."
