Atlas University Academic Receives International Innovation Award

Dr. Arif Karabuğa, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at Istanbul Atlas University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, won the Innovation Award among 432 papers and projects at the 21st International Sustainable Energy Technologies Congress held in China. In the project titled "Assessment of The Exergy And Economic Analysis of Solar Energy-based Electricity And Hydrogen Production System" led by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Zafer Utlu, both thermodynamic and economic analyses of hydrogen production at low temperatures were conducted.

Dr. Arif Karabuğa, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at Istanbul Atlas University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, participated in the 21st International Sustainable Energy Technologies Congress organized by the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET) in China on 12-14 August 2024. The project titled "Assessment of The Exergy And Economic Analysis of Solar Energy-based Electricity And Hydrogen Production System" led by Istanbul Atlas University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Zafer Utlu was presented at the congress by Dr. Arif Karabuğa. The project won the Innovation Award among 432 projects and papers.

In the project that won the Innovation Award, both thermodynamic and economic analyses of hydrogen production at low temperatures were conducted. In this highly significant project, targets specified in the hydrogen roadmaps of numerous countries, particularly the United Nations, were achieved.

We achieved sustainability goals through this work

Dr. Arif Karabuğa, stating that they conducted research on solar energy-based hydrogen production, said: "In our presented work, we addressed both the thermodynamic and economic analyses of hydrogen production at low temperatures. The results we obtained in the economic analysis pleased us because we achieved the green hydrogen production costs targeted in the hydrogen roadmaps announced by many developed countries at the United Nations. Through this work, we actually achieved the sustainability goals aimed for in these roadmaps. For this reason, we received this award and it is therefore a quite valuable award for us."

Selected for Innovation Award among 432 projects

Dr. Arif Karabuğa, noting that they received this award from the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET), said: "WSSET is one of the important organizations in the energy field worldwide. We submitted the results of our work to this UK-based association. This association is also one of the supporters of the International Sustainable Energy Technologies Congress. A scientific board formed at this association reviewed the results of our presented work and announced the review results at the congress held in China. Among 432 projects and papers, our work won the Innovation Award."

Hydrogen energy could be a good alternative in the near future

Dr. Arif Karabuğa, noting that hydrogen energy will be a good alternative to fossil energy in the near future, said: "Particularly electric vehicles have entered our lives very rapidly. However, the infrastructure is not very suitable for this. There was a very rapid transition. Many energy companies are now focused on building electric charging stations. Globally, we have not been able to adapt to this very quickly. Electric vehicles have such a problem. Additionally, what is the electricity in electric vehicles generated from? If it is generated from fossil fuels, this does not make much sense. If we generate electricity from different alternative energy sources like renewable energy and use that electricity in cars, then it makes sense." Karabuğa said that hydrogen energy will be one of the energy types that will be heard more frequently in the future and will become part of daily life.
