WANO Support Mission Held at Akkuyu NPP to Strengthen Operational Readiness of Unit 1

The Operational Readiness Assessment (ORA) support mission conducted by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Moscow Centre at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), built by Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, has been completed. The mission team included experts from the Leningrad NPP-2, Kursk, Novovoronezh and Belarus Nuclear Power Plants.
The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Moscow Centre completed an Operational Readiness Assessment (ORA) support mission at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), constructed by Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom. The mission team included specialists from Leningrad NPP-2, Kursk, Novovoronezh and Belarus Nuclear Power Plants.
The independent expert assessment by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Moscow Centre enables the adoption of best global practices for efficient and reliable operation of nuclear power plants.
The ORA mission aimed to examine the plant's readiness for the operational phase through independent expert assessment. Over one week, the WANO team analysed 12 key work areas at AKKUYU NUCLEAR A.Ş., including operations, maintenance, engineering support, radiation and fire protection, personnel training and qualifications, and emergency preparedness.
WANO Moscow Centre Consultant and Mission Leader Andrey Nosov, commenting on the subject, stated: "Our objective is to provide effective support to the operator. We use a comprehensive methodology—interviews, on-site facility inspections, documentation analysis and self-assessment results. All of this helps us provide independent feedback to the plant and offer recommendations needed to increase operational readiness."
At the mission closure meeting, preliminary findings and recommendations were presented to the Akkuyu NPP project team. The final report will be submitted to AKKUYU NUCLEAR A.Ş. within one month.
Sergei Butckikh, General Director of AKKUYU NUCLEAR A.Ş., thanked WANO Moscow Centre experts for their professionalism and contribution to project development. Butckikh stated: "This approach, where all NPP operators can communicate openly and exchange information, helps us develop a safety culture and conduct our work in the most efficient manner. The ORA mission is an important reference point in preparing for the operational phase. We greatly appreciate WANO's expert support, which enables us to correct processes in a timely manner and achieve the highest reliability level for Akkuyu NPP."
