2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Winners Announced

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three scientists. John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino earned the prize for "the Development of Lithium-Ion Batteries".

"Lithium Ion Battery Development" – What Is It?

To briefly explain the development of lithium-ion batteries: lightweight, rechargeable and powerful lithium-ion batteries are used in many different devices such as phones, computers and electric vehicles. These batteries, which store energy obtained from sun and wind, have opened the door to a society free from fossil fuel energy. John Goodenough was born in Germany in 1922. He conducted his research at the University of Texas in Austin, USA. Stanley Whittingham, born in the United Kingdom in 1941, holds a position at the University in New York State. Akira Yoshino was born in Japan in 1948. He works at Meijo Universities in Tokyo and Nagoya.
