High-Barrier Vinyl Acrylic Lacquers Vinyl acrylic resins account for 27% of the paints and coatings sector by volume in the global market. With continuous technological advancement and rising costs, competition has accelerated in technical textiles sectors. There is demand for vinyl acrylic lacquers with different surface properties, UV resistance, high alcohol resistance, easy cleanability, barrier properties, PVC compatibility and ease of application. The outdoor use of tarpaulins and advertising panels has necessitated high and durable barrier properties. Plasticizers, used primarily to reduce costs, negatively impact performance. Generally, as the molecular weight of polymers increases, the rigidity in the structure and intermolecular attractive forces increase, and consequently the processability and mechanical and thermal properties of the polymeric structure, along with electrical, optical and chemical properties, change significantly. As molecular weight increases, the mechanical properties of the polymeric structure—particularly tensile strength, impact resistance, melting temperature and softening temperature, and thermal resistance—initially increase rapidly, then level off and remain constant. Conversely, the melt viscosity of the polymeric structure initially shows slow increase, then rapid increase. In other words, while the mechanical properties of high molecular weight polymer structures improve, their processability becomes more difficult. Commercial polymeric products that possess both adequate processability and sufficient mechanical properties are desired to have molecular weights between 104-106 Da. Synthetic polymer products with molecular weights up to 10 million daltons can be prepared. Natural polymers and bio-polymers have molecular weights well above these values.
The reasons for using vinyl acrylic polymers are:
• Good film formation, • Hydrolysis resistance, • Non-yellowing, • Good adhesion properties, • Flexibility values, • High chemical resistance, • High UV resistance.
Acrylic binders can be examined in 3 different structures.
• Styrene Acrylic – S/AC; The film is very hard and brittle. Not used alone. Used only as a copolymer. More resistant to scratching, abrasion and water. Abrasion resistance is good. They provide slippery glossy films. • Vinyl Acrylic – V/AC; Resistant to solvents. Form films on the surface. Good hiding power. Poor cold resistance. • Acrylic Acrylic – A/AC; Produce elastic and transparent films. Resistant to light and oxidation. Films are more adhesive, wear resistance is good. No yellowing tendency. As chain length and esterification increase, film softness and adhesiveness increase. Nevertheless, cold resistance and moisture resistance improve.
