PrimeLab Photometer Enables Legionella Analysis Within One Hour

What is Legionella?

In a hospital or hotel shower head, a car wash, or an industrial cooling system, aerosols can contain water droplets filled with bacteria. Legionella can travel very long distances through the air, reaching us this way through inhalation. Infection cases have been found within a radius of up to 10 km from the source. Legionella cases have been reported within a radius of up to 10 km from the source. When Legionella reaches our lungs, it will spread and colonize very rapidly. Pneumonia develops within a few days. Legionella disease is a systemic infectious disease primarily affecting the lungs and has a mortality rate between 5% and 30%. 95-98% of reported total cases can be attributed to Legionella Pneumophila. This disease is an important public health issue, with an average mortality rate of 12-15%, and this rate can easily reach 30-50% in patients with weak immune systems or those who do not start antibiotic treatment immediately.

Advantages of the Legipid® + PrimeLab System

The Legionella test currently used as standard requires two weeks to allow legionella bacteria to grow and be counted, and involves a culture method that prevents hazard prevention. The Legipid® test is based on a patented immunomagnetic method that detects only living Legionella bacteria. A color develops during the test and this color is easily measured with the PrimeLab photometer.

How It Works

The standard culture method requires Legionella to grow on an agar over several days and become countable. Legipid works differently. 1 liter of sample water is filtered through filter paper to concentrate Legionella. The Legionella on the filter paper is dissolved in a small vial to which "L1" reagent is added. "L1" is a patented solution containing immunomagnetic particles (antibodies) that bind only to Legionella bacteria. After several washing steps, a staining solution is added to color the captured Legionella. Color concentration is linked to Legionella concentration, which enables it to be tested by PrimeLab 1.0. The result is displayed per test as cfu.

Legipid® Test Kit

The Legipid® test kit contains everything you need to run Legionella tests, apart from a PrimeLab plastic adapter for 1 ml vials and a filter kit to filter your water sample. Both the adapter and filter set are available as accessories. Legipid® is supplied as a kit consisting of 10, 40, or 100 units. Each test requires only one "Control Sample".

Requirements

For any laboratory already using PrimeLab, the only thing you need is an update via PrimeLab Desktop Assistant Software or App, an activation code for ID 147 (Legionella), and a small plastic adapter to use 1 ml Legionella vials. If you do not yet have a PrimeLab, it is sufficient to procure the PrimeLab photometer, which can measure at 400 different wavelengths with Jencolor sensor technology containing 120 different methods ranging from alkalinity to zinc.
