FormacsHT Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzer
The FormacsHT TOC/TN analyzer uses high-temperature catalytic combustion to rapidly and reliably analyze total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) values.
The system is designed to measure nitrogen concentration and/or carbon fractions from various sample matrices. The instrument can operate as a stand-alone analyzer, but a random-access autosampler is also available for full automation.
The instrument is optimized for sample type and a range of different catalysts, with operating temperatures specifically designed to permit analysis of all carbon and nitrogen fractions present in the sample. Fractions can be measured sequentially or simultaneously through automated sample preparation operations such as acidification and purging.

The Total Carbon (TC) value is obtained by injection of the sample into the high-temperature combustion furnace.Carbon Fractions
TC is converted to carbon dioxide (CO2) through catalytic oxidation at temperatures up to 950°C. The CO2 is dispersed into the carrier gas and CO2 concentration is measured by a non-dispersive infrared detector (NDIR). TIC is determined by injecting the sample into a reactor containing acid, converting inorganic carbon to CO2. The infrared detector measures the CO2 produced during acidification. TOC concentration is calculated automatically by subtracting TIC from TC. (TOC = TC - TIC) Additionally, non-volatile organic carbon (N-VOC) can be measured through automated acidification and sample purging. TIC and VOC (volatile organic carbon) can be removed. N-VOC residues in the sample and the sample are directly measured by injection into the high-temperature combustion furnace. If VOC concentration is negligible, N-VOC equals TOC (TOC = N-VOC + VOC). Optionally, the FormacsHT can be configured to directly measure VOC. VOC can be purged from the liquid sample. Carrier gas + VOC is injected into the high-temperature combustion furnace and measured with NDIR.Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) Analysis
A wide range of TN concentration is measured with high accuracy in a short analysis time using chemiluminescence. The sample is injected into a high-temperature furnace where it combusts catalytically. Oxidative pyrolysis converts chemically bound nitrogen to Nitric Oxide (NO). In the ND25 detector, NO reacts with quasi-stable Nitrogen Dioxide. Photons emitted from rapid decomposition of quasi-stable Nitrogen Dioxide are detected by a photomultiplier tube (PMT). The FormacsHT analyzer also offers an economical and safer alternative for Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) analysis with an internal NN reactor for Nitrate + Nitrite (NN) analysis.The TKN value is determined in two steps, through TN analysis and NO3+NO2 chemical reduction analysis. The TKN value is obtained through automatic subtraction. TKN = TN – NN. This unique alternative method provides very fast analysis time (5 min.) and eliminates the use of hazardous acids. The PrimacsMCS add-on module analyzes solid materials and works with FormacsHT liquid sample analyzers. It offers an economical solution for laboratories processing different sample types. The unit consists of two integrated reactors for TC and TIC analysis without any sample preparation. TC is determined by catalytic oxidation of the sample at 1100°C, which converts carbon to CO2. TIC is determined by acidification of the sample in a separate reactor that converts IC to CO2. PrimacsMCS uses the Formacs instrument's NDIR detector for CO2 detection. The PrimacsMCS analyzer analyzes TC, TIC, and TOC. The software calculates the TOC concentration of samples by subtraction (TC - TIC = TOC).Features
