Elastopan® ULD Sets New Standard for Lightness in Polyurethane Slipper Systems

Low density and elasticity. These two parameters are the most fundamental properties sought in footwear soles. BASF has achieved an industry first with its "Elastopan® ULD" (ULD = Ultra Low Density) polyurethane sole system. This newly developed system, with a mold density of 200kg/m3, is approximately 30% lighter and more elastic than existing polyurethane systems. Low mold temperature processing capability, excellent skin formation, improved flex test performance and fast mold opening time are among the system's other benefits. Known for offering lighter, softer and more flexible footwear solutions beyond the sole sector, BASF has also developed Elastopan® Light Sports, a polyether PU system specially produced for the sports sector. The main characteristics of this PU system include lightness, excellent cushioning, high rebound response and hydrolysis resistance. Another product developed by BASF is "Elastollan® Light," a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing a blowing agent. It is used particularly with injection molding methods to produce light and quality thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) soles at low cost. For the safety footwear sector, BASF offers another low-density system with "Elastopan® Light Safe," which uses water as a blowing agent and features antistatic properties. Midsoles produced with this new material are lighter than standard PU midsole systems and thus provide significantly greater comfort. "Elastopan® Light Safe" can also be used together with TPU or rubber outsoles to produce dual-density soles that meet the requirements of ISO standard EN20344:2011.
