Nutricia Turkey Urges Parents: Don't Ignore Minor Symptoms

Nutricia Turkey is launching the "There's a Reason" project to draw attention to cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA), one of the most common food allergies in the first year of life, and to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis.

In CMPA, symptoms often considered "normal" such as gas, colic and prolonged crying can lead to delays in diagnosis. Developed with an "every symptom has a reason" approach, the project aims to encourage parents to reassess seemingly minor signs while strengthening early diagnosis awareness together with healthcare professionals.

Holistic approach for early awareness
Nutricia Turkey continues to pursue its goal of contributing to public health in line with its human-centered approach. The "There's a Reason" project stands out as a comprehensive awareness initiative covering both families and healthcare professionals regarding CMPA.

Cow's milk protein allergy can develop in breastfed infants through the mother's consumption of milk and dairy products, or through the use of cow's milk-based infant formula and follow-on formulas. Symptoms may include skin rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and swelling of the face or throat, as well as more ambiguous symptoms such as gas lasting longer than two weeks, irritability and intense crying.

These symptoms are often confused with normal infant behavior, which can lead to diagnostic delays of up to an average of 4.5 months. This situation makes early awareness even more critical.

"Sometimes a small sign tells of a big reason"
Cenk Kurt, Director of Expert Nutrition at Nutricia Turkey, made the following comments on the project:

"The biggest challenge in cow's milk protein allergy is that symptoms are often confused with normal infant behavior. Yet behind what appears to be a small sign there can be an important cause. With the 'There's a Reason' project, our aim is to support parents' access to accurate information, create a shared awareness platform with healthcare professionals, and make the importance of early diagnosis visible. Because every symptom detected in time can make a significant difference in a baby's quality of life."

First presentation on scientific grounds: "Pediatrician's Day"
The project was first presented at the 9th Pediatrician's Day Educational Meeting organized in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in line with the scientific vision of the Turkish National Pediatric Society.

The meeting, which addressed pediatric practice through case-based approaches, stood out as an important scientific platform for discussing current developments in child health. The "There's a Reason" project was addressed within the scope of the event with a focus on early diagnosis and awareness.

Experts stress early diagnosis
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Arga, Deputy Secretary General of the Turkish National Pediatric Society, drew attention to the challenges in diagnosing CMPA, stating:

"Cow's milk protein allergy can present with non-specific symptoms in the early period of life, making it difficult to recognize. Family awareness and physicians' current approaches play a critical role in this process. Early evaluation, correct diagnosis and management form the foundation."

Prof. Dr. Arzu Bakırtaş, Chair of the Pediatric Allergy Immunology and Asthma Society, said: "It is very important for families and physicians to correctly interpret these symptoms. Because often there really is a reason."

The "There's a Reason" project aims to build an information bridge between parents and healthcare professionals, ensure timely recognition of seemingly minor symptoms, and strengthen early diagnosis awareness in CMPA. The project, which adopts a multidisciplinary approach, aims to improve the quality of life of infants.
