Vitamin D Use Has Positive Effects on Psychology! The sun not only provides you with a bronze tan during summer months, but also supplies vitamin D, which is very important for our health. Recent research conducted with patients who contracted Covid-19 has revealed that people with vitamin D deficiency face a higher risk of infection. Did you know that vitamin D contributes positively not only to physical development and our health, but also to our psychological state? Before resorting to antidepressants, we can learn our vitamin D levels through a simple blood test and solve this problem quite easily. Spec. Dr. Sedat Işık, Internal Medicine Specialist at Avrasya Hospital, provided explanations on the subject.

What Is the Importance of Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is indispensable for the human body. It strengthens the immune system and bones and helps protect muscles. While this vitamin is obtained mainly from sunlight, it can also be supplemented through healthy nutrition. Its deficiency weakens the immune system and can trigger many diseases.

Functions of Vitamin D;

  • Strengthens bones and teeth,
  • Prevents the formation of certain types of cancer, heart and diabetes diseases in the body,
  • Protects against depression,
  • Balances blood pressure,
  • Corrects insulin resistance and thyroid functions.

What Causes Vitamin D Deficiency?

The most important cause of vitamin D deficiency is that the body is not sufficiently exposed to UVB rays from the sun. The body cannot obtain the vitamin D it gets from the sun in any other way. Advanced age, digestive disorders, dark skin color, cholesterol, and certain medications such as epilepsy drugs prevent the body from absorbing the vitamin even when exposed to sunlight. Another cause of vitamin D deficiency is vegetarian diet. Foods where vitamin D is found in abundance are animal products such as fish, meat, and eggs, and not consuming these triggers this condition.

Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms

  • Bone pain,
  • Depression,
  • Muscle weakness,
  • Common cold,
  • Bladder problems,
  • Diarrhea,
  • Constipation,
  • Excessive head sweating,
  • Fatigue,
  • Weight gain,
  • High blood pressure,
  • Pain in joint areas and head,
  • Muscle cramps.

How Is Vitamin D Supplementation and Treatment Done?

The most important treatment is to get plenty of sun exposure. In cases where this is not sufficient, vitamin D can also be obtained through D3 vitamin supplementation prescribed by doctors. When D3 vitamin is consumed together with food, its absorption and benefit by the body increases. The daily amount of vitamin D that needs to be taken varies depending on age. For this reason, necessary tests should be performed as age advances.

People Who Should Have Frequent Check-ups;

  • People over 50 years of age,
  • People who do not get sun exposure,
  • People who have had stomach surgery,
  • People with liver disease,
  • People with constant bone and muscle pain complaints,
  • People with bone loss.
