The Enemy in the Mirror: The Silent Battle with Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa, which has come back into the spotlight recently, concerns all segments of society with both its physical and psychological dimensions. This eating disorder, which particularly affects young individuals, is being deepened further by the modern world's perception of the "ideal body." Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili explains every detail that needs attention, from the definition of anorexia to the treatment process.

Anorexia nervosa, which has recently returned to the agenda, concerns all segments of society not only physically but also psychologically. This eating disorder, which particularly affects young individuals, deepens further with the modern world's perception of the "ideal body." Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili explains every detail that needs attention from the definition of anorexia to the treatment process.

What is Anorexia and Why is it Dangerous?
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which, despite serious weight loss, an individual still feels overweight, deliberately restricts eating behaviors, and is driven by fear of weight gain. The process, which begins with a tendency toward insufficient nutrient intake or complete refusal to eat, brings about numerous physical and psychological health problems.

Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili notes that this condition is not merely a desire to lose weight; distorted body image, anxiety disorders, perfectionism, and need for control are also important contributing factors. She emphasizes that anorexia is a manifestation of deteriorating mental health.

Who is at Risk?
Although anorexia is particularly common among adolescent girls, it can occur in all age groups and genders. While more frequently seen in women, anorexia cases in men are steadily increasing. Modern society's obsession with a "thin body," beauty standards promoted on social media platforms, and excessive emphasis on appearance play a major role in triggering this condition.

How Do Media-Covered Cases Affect Young People?
Although anorexia cases experienced by celebrities draw public attention, in some young individuals it reinforces the perception that "being thin = success/beauty." This creates a foundation for unhealthy behaviors. In particular, "fit appearance" content encountered through social media algorithms can unconsciously push individuals toward this disease. For this reason, it is crucial that news coverage in the media be conveyed in a responsible manner.

How is Anorexia Nervosa Identified?
Anorexia generally manifests itself through observable signs. Families and those in close proximity must be alert to these indicators:

•    Refusing to eat
•    Excessive and compulsive exercise
•    Constant weighing and mirror checking
•    Obsessive interest in weight, calories, and nutrition topics
•    Tendency to vomit after eating
•    Extremely restricted diet practices

When these signs are observed, an individual's fear of weight gain despite appearing "thin" can be a typical indicator of anorexia.

Physical Symptoms Must Not be Overlooked
As a result of prolonged low-calorie nutrition, the body sustains serious damage. The physical symptoms caused by anorexia nervosa can be listed as follows:

•    Severe weight loss
•    Menstrual irregularities or absence of menstruation
•    Drop in body temperature, constant feeling of cold
•    Hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails
•    Increased fine body hair (lanugo)
•    Fatigue, weakness, fainting sensation
•    Dizziness, shortness of breath, low blood pressure
•    Heart rhythm irregularities
•    Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

As these symptoms progress, they can lead to serious consequences including organ failure.

Life is in Danger if Left Untreated
Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili emphasizes that if anorexia nervosa is left untreated, it can create life-threatening risks such as neuron loss in the nervous system, heart failure, rhythm disorders, osteoporosis, weakened immunity, digestive system disorders, and even organ failure.

How Does the Diagnosis and Treatment Process Progress?
For proper diagnosis, other conditions such as hyperthyroidism, bulimia, and orthorexia must be ruled out. The treatment process requires a multidisciplinary approach. A psychiatrist, psychologist, dietitian, physiotherapist, and family must all be involved in the process together.

Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili states, "In anorexia treatment, teamwork and patience are essential. Rebuilding the individual's body image is the foundation of healthy recovery."

•    A psychiatrist evaluates the individual's mental processes and provides medication support if necessary.

•    A psychologist helps correct distorted body image and contributes to the individual's acceptance process.

•    A dietitian creates personalized plans for the body's rebalancing and development of healthy eating habits.

•    Family support is an indispensable element for treatment success.

Although the treatment duration varies from person to person, complete recovery from anorexia is possible with determination and expert support.

What Should Families Do?
Since anorexia often progresses with denial, families need to approach it in an understanding manner, free from blame and pressure. Instead of a blaming or coercive approach, supportive and compassionate communication should be preferred. Sudden changes in eating habits and obsessive thoughts about body image can be early warning signs. Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili emphasizes the importance of family communication by stating, "Family support plays a key role in the treatment process."

What Can We Do as a Society?
Social structures that glorify and idealize thinness create reinforcing effects for anorexia. Placing healthy body image, mental well-being, and correct eating habits at the forefront plays a major role in disease prevention. Dietitian Elif Hançer Bingili, who works at Güneşli Erdem Hospital, states that anorexia nervosa can be completely recovered with early diagnosis and sustained treatment. By saying "It must be remembered that health, not thinness, is the ideal," she calls on society to act consciously.
