1. Purpose of This Article

This article is a consultant providing a list of recommendations regarding effective safety practices in the transport and logistics management of organic peroxides for land, air and sea shipment. Current transport regulations permit a standard structure for the legal basis of safe transportation. However, concerning high-technology product materials, matters relating to loading, truck and/or container arrangement, combined joining, guide guidelines, delivery methods, requirement methods, etc. are not fully specified in beneficial transport regulations. Akpa Organic Peroxide holds OHSAS 18001 and ISO 9001 certifications. It manufactures products in compliance with the stated quality standards. Our objective is to ensure safe approach and transport of organic peroxides in road and sea transportation. In accordance with legal bases, the stated policy and materials apply all methods of this model. In the transport functions of organic peroxides on land or at sea, general transport regulations are determined by ADR (land) and IMDG Code (sea). In the transport of dangerous goods, substances are divided into different categories according to hazard classes. Organic peroxides are listed in class 5.2 and the transport symbol is as follows.

UN number listed by Organic Peroxide types:

2. Temperature-Controlled Transport

All organic peroxides are thermally unstable and may tend to decompose with greater or lesser severity compared to the temperature of the material. Some organic peroxides are so unstable that even ambient temperature can be affected by their rapid decomposition, and therefore temperature control and cooling are required in storage and transport. Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) is the lowest temperature at which an organic peroxide in a typical container or shipping package will undergo self-accelerating decomposition within one week. If there is provision for transport of a product in IBCs or tanks, additional verification is required to ensure adequate emergency pressure relief and/or ventilation.

3. Measures to be Taken for Preparation, Loading, Unloading and Stacking of Trucks and Containers

Certain measures must be taken to safely prepare, load, store and dispose of packages, trucks and containers. The main elements described below are of critical importance for Organic Peroxides.

4. Stacking

For temperature-controlled Organic Peroxides, the proper storage sequence should be examined when combining various organic peroxides in a refrigerated container. Stack different organic peroxides in the same container and store at the lowest control temperature (Tc) closest to the container doors. According to this situation, stacking plans should be in place. In sea transport, stacking of containers containing organic peroxide should be done on top of organic peroxide containers. Stacking should also be carried out to provide easy access to cooling units, doors and temperature controls.

5. Special Materials Required for Transport Temperature-Controlled Transport

For non-temperature-controlled Organic Peroxides, logistics operations such as covered trucks or standard containers should be performed. In addition, products that do not react at room temperature should preferably use temperature-controlled vehicles during summer and winter months for safety reasons (for example, crystallization or degradation may occur in the product) and appropriate transport materials should be selected.

Land Transport

Temperature-controlled products are shipped in refrigerated trucks, refrigerated containers or tanks with the lowest temperature protection and at least an individual cooling unit. The cooling unit/units must be capable of operating the forklift independently. Temperature protection in the cooling fluid system (cooling with "consumable-containing coolant", for example dry ice) is not used; a mechanical cooling unit is always selected. Forklifts must have an audible and visual alarm that detects and indicates when the alarm temperature is exceeded. The temperature of the cooling cabin must always be readable in the transport cabin. The purpose of mechanical or digital temperature recording devices to monitor transport temperature is a common practice. An emergency spare parts box should be available for emergency intervention that may occur in the cooling unit. Additionally, logistics companies must have temperature and vehicle inspections carried out by designated inspection companies at designated control points along the transit route. Sea Transport Temperature-controlled Organic Peroxides are stored in refrigerated containers or refrigerated tank containers for sea transport. The relevant containers are equipped with a dual (redundant) cooling system or, in special cases, with a separate system (permitted by IMDG Code only once).
