Online Monitoring of Phosphating Baths in the Automotive Industry

Chemical conversion coating processes are a prerequisite for automotive bodies before painting in the automotive sector. The zinc-phosphating process is widely accepted in most automotive paint shops globally. In phosphating processes, maintaining the quality of the coated surface layer at the highest level, continuous monitoring of relevant parameters and rapid feedback are of great importance to ensure a homogeneous and corrosion-resistant coating. Analyses performed in phosphating process baths can lead to significant production quality and time losses due to errors that may occur in manual sampling of samples prior to direct measurements and titrations, as well as manual analysis procedures. In online phosphating line analysis systems, bath parameter measurements are performed through automatic sampling of the sample and completion of all subsequent analytical procedures without any intervention and without manual handling. By automatically transferring the obtained analysis results to PLC controller systems, quick intervention in the process is achieved, and this framework provides significant advantages, especially in the automotive industry. Compared to manual analyses, fully automated online potentiometric analyses prevent errors such as incorrect sampling, failure to determine equivalence points in titration-based analyses, and inaccurate and non-reproducible results. Since all procedures from bath sampling, sample preparation, chemical additions, sample analysis, and results recording are automatically provided under the analyzer system, measurement errors, differences between operators and analysis time inconsistencies are eliminated, and as continuous analyses are performed without manual handling, labor requirements decrease while operator safety increases.
