The Istanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association (İKMİB), which organizes various activities aimed at establishing the chemical industry as a leader in global markets, sought solutions to sector challenges through a "Medical Sector Future Research" event held between 23-24 December 2017 with approximately 60 sector representatives in attendance.

Since 1991, İKMİB has served more than 10,000 members on export operations and organizes various activities to establish member companies as leaders in global markets. Through its international fairs and trade and purchasing delegation organizations, İKMİB plays an important role in helping chemical exporters reach new markets. In this context, İKMİB held the "Medical Sector Future Research" event to find effective solutions to challenges in the medical sector, one of the highest value-added subsectors. The organization, held in Istanbul between 23-24 December 2017, brought together leading actors in the sector.   The workshop, attended by representatives of sector companies as well as MASSİAD, DİŞSİAD, TÜMDEF, OSTİM Medical Cluster, İSEK, Turkey Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Agency, Turkish Customs Ministry and Turkish Ministry of Economy, received considerable interest. During the workshop, steps were taken toward recording important developments for the medical sector through various answers to questions such as "What are the economic and political developments taking place at regional and global levels and their impacts on our sector, what are the domestic and foreign problems encountered in international trade, and what new solution proposals can overcome or completely eliminate our sector's common problems within the scope of our capabilities?"

United States Leads Medical Sector

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, İKMİB Board Chairman Murat Akyüz provided information about the global medical sector, saying: "The medical devices and medical sector globally is undergoing rapid transformation, moving toward becoming a more knowledge and capital-intensive sector than before. In 2016, USD 228 billion in production was generated worldwide in the sector, with USD 102 billion of this production value realized in the United States. China, which followed, produced 12.8% of total output (USD 29 billion), while Germany produced USD 26 billion, accounting for 11% of total output. Turkey produced 0.5% of medical and surgical device production, with our country's production value reaching USD 1.2 billion."
